Biography

Miriam Anderson is Associate Professor of Global Politics at Toronto Metropolitan University and Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Women, Peace and Security at the London School of Economics and Political Science (2022-2026). She holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (Politics and International Studies) and an MA (Political Science) and a BA (International Relations) from the University of British Columbia. Dr. Anderson researches non-state actors in international security, specializing in women’s participation in peace processes and in post-war politics. She has conducted fieldwork in Burundi, Kenya, Northern Ireland and Rwanda.

Dr. Anderson is the author of Windows of Opportunity: How Women Seize Peace Negotiations (Oxford University Press, 2016) and co-editor of Transnational Actors in War and Peace: Militants, Activists, and Corporations in World Politics (Georgetown University Press, 2017). Her work has also been published in various edited volumes and journals, including International Studies Review, Global Studies Quarterly, Politics & Gender, and International Negotiation. She has held visiting scholar positions at the Centre for Women, Peace and Security (LSE); Institute for African Studies (Elliot School for International Affairs, George Washington University); Institute of Development Policy and Management, (University of Antwerp); and at the School of International and Public Affairs (Columbia University).

Dr. Anderson is a member of the Canadian Research Network for Women, Peace, and Security (based at McGill), a member of the international editorial board of the Women, Peace, and Security at de Gruyter press, and a board member of the Ranked Ballot Initiative for Toronto (RaBIT). From 2018-2020 Dr. Anderson served as Undergraduate Program Director for the BA (Hons) program in Politics and Governance at TMU. She is currently the Interim Director of the Arts and Contemporary Studies BA (hons) program.

From 1999-2002, Miriam worked as a human rights monitor for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Mission to the Republic of Croatia. During this period she also monitored elections in Bosnia-Herzegovina and in Croatia for the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). Miriam was a participant in the One World Global Education program (1994-1995), volunteering with grassroots development associations in El Salvador, Mexico, and Nicaragua.

Dr. Miriam Anderson researches non-state actors in international security, specializing on women’s participation in peace processes and in post-conflict. She is currently completing a project using social network analysis to determine the impact of gender-inclusive peace negotiations on women’s political influence in post-conflict politics. She teaches courses on international relations, qualitative research methods, women and international security, and women and politics.
