TMU’s first university-wide Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy and Action Plan
At Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) are not just values to uphold — they are integral to the mission of academic excellence and social responsibility.
“Through ongoing attention to EDI across university plans, policies, and projects, TMU is recognized as a leader in diversity,” said President Mohamed Lachemi. “With this strong foundation, we are well-positioned to leverage existing institutional knowledge, experience, and action toward a more collaborative, coordinated and impactful EDI approach.”
President Lachemi has tasked the Office of the Vice-President, Equity and Community Inclusion (OVPECI) with developing TMU’s first university-wide EDI Strategy and Action Plan. The plan will create a framework for EDI practices at the university, affirm TMU’s commitments and guide decision-making for years to come.
Roberta Iannacito-Provenzano, provost and vice-president, academic, said, “A comprehensive EDI strategy will align with and enrich other TMU strategies and plans, including the 2025-2030 Academic Plan, to support holistic excellence and enhance the experiences and success of our students, faculty, and staff.”
Led by Vice-President, ECI Tanya (Toni) DeMello, an appointed advisory committee will guide the project team through community consultation, research and leadership collaboration.
This project will be strengthened by a high level of engagement from students, faculty and staff. There will be two rounds of community engagement: a campus-wide survey (available until December 4, 2024), followed by targeted sessions with equity-deserving groups, campus leaders and student groups in Winter 2025 to define strategy and high-impact action. All participation will serve to influence how the advancement of EDI can support the university’s vision and will set priorities to drive meaningful, lasting change.
Complete the online survey by December 4, 2024
To ensure that our collective voices shape the future of EDI at the university, all TMU community members are invited to participate in the process to help establish a cohesive framework that aligns principles with actions and allows TMU to achieve measurable progress over the next five years.
"I encourage all TMU community members to help shape the future of EDI by participating in the process." —President Mohamed Lachemi
