As we step into a new academic year, TMU  invites you to delve into a dynamic lineup of campus activities this September. From TMU’s homecoming celebration, to The Buone Nuove: Good News from Italy exhibition, to the pop-up free store, there’s something for everyone. Check out the events below to make the most of back to school, and connect with the university community. 

September 1 - 6
Pop-Up Free Store
Do you like free stuff and believe in giving gently used items a second chance? The Sustainability Office is hosting a pop-up free store. The pop-up is a one-stop shop for TMU students to pick up secondhand treasures that you want, all for free! Choose from a variety of free items such as office supplies, electronics, home decor, kitchen supplies and books to get you started for the school year ahead.

September 5 - October 10
Buone Nuove/Good News – Women In Architecture – from MAXXI to MET
TMU is thrilled to host the internationally acclaimed architecture exhibition Buone Nuove: Good News from Italy, which first opened at the MAXXI museum in Rome in 2022. After travelling to Stockholm, Doha, New Delhi and Berlin, Buone Nuove/Good News opens at TMU’s Paul H. Cocker Gallery in the Department of Architectural Science for its inaugural North American showing on Sept. 5.

September 10, 17, 24
TMU Farmers Market
A staple at TMU for almost a decade, the Farmers Market is a weekly market featuring delicious food, fresh produce and more from local farmers, producers, artisans and vendors. Don’t miss your chance to check it out, the market runs on Gould Street nearly every Tuesday until Oct. 29.

If you need some fresh fruit and veg, the TMU campus farmers market is the place to be on Tuesdays this month.

September 11
The Image Centre Fall Exhibitions Opening Reception
Join the Image Centre for the grand opening of five new fall 2024 exhibitions. Be the first to take in the Lee Miller: A Photographer at Work (external link)  exhibition, which chronicles the professional life of American photographer Lee Miller; delve into the works of Ikumagialiit – ᐃᑯᒪᒋᐊᓖᑦ (external link) , a performance art band celebrating women’s voices through collaboration; explore Nadine Valcin: Origines (external link) , a film examining the quest for identity, Blackness and belonging; experience Samuel Toward: Where The River Runs (external link) , which explores the Don River’s crucial role in Toronto’s identity; and contemplate the intersection of astronomy, history, and photography in Gabrielle Tyrie: Looking for the Oldest Piece of Light (external link) . Free admission and all are welcome!

Rise, Thrive, and Flourish: Welcome Ceremony for New & Returning Black Students
You're invited to join us at our Welcome Ceremony for Black Students. This event aims to set a positive tone for the year ahead by fostering a welcoming and supportive environment, providing valuable resources and networking opportunities, and celebrating the achievements of the Black community on campus. Please note that space for in-person attendance is limited. Please register to attend!

September 12
Indigenous Student Orientation and Welcome
Are you a new or returning Indigenous student at TMU? Join Indigenous Student Services for an engaging afternoon on Sept. 12, as we warmly welcome new students and reconnect with returning students. This event is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the Indigenous community. All those who register will be eligible to win door prizes, including gift cards to spend at the TMU Campus Store, coffee shops and grocery stores. Drop in when you can!

September 12
Virtual Pow Wow Etiquette Teachings
Please join us virtually for Pow Wow etiquette teachings by Bob Goulais. These teachings will ensure all attendees know what to expect at a Pow Wow and to participate fully and respectfully. There will also be an in-person Pow Wow etiquette teaching at the Pwaaganigaawin / Pow Wow on Friday, Sept. 13 from 11:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the Kerr Hall Quad.

September 13
TMU Pwaaganigaawin/ Pow Wow
The TMU Pwaaganigaawin / Pow Wow returns on Friday, Sept. 13. The day will begin with the lighting of a sacred fire, followed by a sunrise ceremony conducted by Clayton Shirt. There will be Pow Wow dancing, beautiful sounds of drums and singing, and many Indigenous vendors and information booths on-site. Aambe bizhaak / All are welcome to join in the celebration. No registration is required!

Zone Street Fair 2024
Want to know what makes going to school at TMU different from other places? We have Zones! On Sept. 18, check out the 9th annual Zone Street Fair on Gould Street to find out what a Zone is, how you can join, and what it can do for you. If you’re looking for a place to build a startup, explore job opportunities, pursue your passions, and get real experience that’ll get you hired, then get out of your comfort zone and into a TMU Zone! Don’t miss out on your chance for free snacks, swag, games and more.

TMU’s Homecoming Celebration
We are thrilled to invite you to TMU’s Homecoming Celebration on Sept. 19 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC). Join a crowd of roaring TMU BOLD fans as we gear up for an exciting night celebrating our blue and gold spirit, while watching our men's hockey team as they face off against the Brock Badgers! Game time is 6:00 p.m.

September 30
Orange Shirt Day
Ozaawaa Babigoyaan Giizhigad (Orange Shirt Day) is a commemorative day of recognition and awareness-raising about the impacts and history of the Canadian Residential School System and government policy imposed on Indigenous Peoples. University community members, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, are invited to attend a number of events taking place on campus and are encouraged to wear orange to remember, reflect and show their support in honouring survivors of residential schools. More information to come!
