President and Vice-Chancellor Mohamed Lachemi (centre), and from left, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones, Premier Doug Ford and Patrick Brown, mayor of the City of Brampton. All leaders were in Brampton for the unveiling of signage at the future home of TMU’s School of Medicine.

In March 2022, the Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford announced that his government would be moving forward with TMU’s School of Medicine located in Brampton. Just over two years later, Ford along with representatives from every level of government, were onsite at the future home of TMU’s School of Medicine for a special signage unveiling last week.

“This is really politics in action where we have all levels of government working together for the benefit of the people of Brampton,” said Lachemi in his remarks welcoming a large group of officials and partners to mark this next phase in preparation for the school to open its doors to students in 2025.

Since the School of Medicine was announced, TMU has secured several valuable partnerships. William Osler Health System is the school’s primary clinical partner and TMU has signed affiliation agreements with Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga and western Toronto, Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville, and the Region of Peel. Lachemi says that over 25 clinical sites have indicated their intent to work with TMU’s School of Medicine with more joining every day. The school will have 94 undergraduate seats and 105 postgraduate seats.

“These new seats will help train doctors of the future,” said Premier Ford. “Someone born in Brampton, who went to high school in Brampton, will now be able to go to med school here at this campus.”

Serving a diverse and multicultural region

TMU’s School of Medicine will also be home to a primary care clinic that will increase healthcare capacity in the Brampton community.

“All of this is coming together under the founding principles of equity, diversity and inclusion, as we build a school to meet the needs of this wonderfully diverse and multicultural city and region,” said Lachemi.

TMU’s School of Medicine is located at the former site of the Bramalea Civic Centre in Brampton. The site was chosen for its central location and accessibility within the city including to transit and to local hospitals. TMU will welcome its first cohort of residents in July 2025 and medical students in September 2025, pending successful preliminary accreditation for the MD program by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools.

It was announced in April that Diamond and Schmitt was selected as the primary consultant to design and plan the School of Medicine. Two Row Architects have been engaged to consult on the implementation of Indigenous design elements.
