Thomas Duever reappointed dean, FEAS

I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Thomas Duever as dean, Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science (FEAS) for Ryerson University, for a five-year term. A highly respected senior academic administrator and accomplished researcher, Tom joined Ryerson in 2014 and brings a wealth of experience to this role.

Upon his arrival, he collaborated with faculty, staff and students to develop a clear strategic plan for FEAS entitled, “Striving for Excellence”, which has served as a blueprint for his team since its publication in 2016, and supports the university's overarching mission and vision.

Known for his collegiality, as well as his approachable and supportive leadership style, Tom has successfully created an atmosphere of cooperation and trust within the faculty to better support an engaged learning environment for students. Under his direction, FEAS has embraced an “All-In-Approach to Education” with seven focus areas, including wellbeing; identity fluency and competency; academic and career preparation; experiential learning; scholarships and awards; personal profile; and scholarly, research and creative (SRC) opportunities.

A champion for FEAS within the university and the broader community, Tom has developed a number of external partnerships that have enhanced the resources available to the faculty. He has also expanded the faculty’s outreach activities – which have been focused on women in engineering – to a much broader mandate that will include Indigenous engagement.

Prior to joining Ryerson, during his nine-year tenure as chair of Waterloo’s Department of Chemical Engineering, Tom led the department toward unprecedented growth, and championed initiatives that contributed to the international reputation of both the department and faculty.

As an internationally recognized researcher, Tom has more than 90 articles in journals and conference proceedings to his credit. He is a prolific presenter who has shared his research findings and his insights on chemical engineering at more than 80 conferences, lectures and seminars worldwide. He has also supervised the research projects of more than 35 graduate students.
