Kelly MacKay appointed vice-provost, academic

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Kelly MacKay as Ryerson’s vice-provost, academic effective December 1, 2018.
An accomplished scholar and academic leader, Kelly joined Ryerson in 2011 and has held positions including interim associate vice-president, research and innovation; associate dean, research and graduate programs at the Ted Rogers School of Management; and professor of tourism in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Through her commitment to community-driven research and student engagement, Kelly established a track record of building productive academic and professional networks. She currently sits on the Scholarly Research and Creative Activity Committee (SRCAC) and the Senate Policy 118 Research Integrity Review Committee, chairs the Policy 144 Research Centres Review Committee, and has served on the Academic Standards Committee, the Research Ethics Board, and the Academic Plan ‘Kitchen Cabinet’.
“It is a great honour and privilege to work for and represent Ryerson’s academic community as the next vice-provost, academic,” said Kelly MacKay. “As we near the completion of Ryerson’s 2014-19 academic plan, we approach new challenges and big decisions for the next five years, and it will be my priority to ensure the university continues the evolution of our high-quality curricula and supports the comprehensive development of faculty to deliver it effectively for the benefit of our students.”
Prior to joining Ryerson, Kelly held various leadership positions at the University of Manitoba including associate dean academic. With extensive experience of strategic academic and resource planning, Kelly was responsible for undergraduate and graduate programs including new program development, program reviews and accreditations, academic hiring and mentoring, external relations, and execution of international projects. In that role, she also served as faculty senator and a member of the Senate Executive Committee.
Kelly has secured more than $2 million in research grants, including a record of support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). She received Ryerson’s Dean’s Service Award in 2014, and in 2016 and 2017 her papers were awarded by the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Marcia Moshé, our interim vice-provost, academic, for her leadership and commitment to the role and all academic matters at Ryerson. Marcia was appointed interim vice-provost, academic on December 1, 2015 and over the past three years, has worked on a number of significant academic policies, teaching and learning initiatives and strategic special projects.
Marcia led the development and Senate approval of (PDF file) Policy 2: Undergraduate Curriculum Structure, which revises Ryerson’s tripartite curriculum to include open electives and provides definitions of more than 40 curricular terms. She also oversaw the development of Ryerson’s first policy on Concentrations, the review and revision of (PDF file) Institutional Quality Assurance Process Policies, and initiated the Honours Designation approval process. As co-chair of the Academic Policy Review Committee, she led the development of (PDF file) Policy 162: Grade Reassessment and Grade Recalculation, a revised (PDF file) Policy 135: Final Examinations, a new (PDF file) Ryerson Health Certificate, and the launch of an online system for student requests for academic consideration.
Under Marcia’s leadership and strategic direction, Ryerson will open a new Centre for Learning and Teaching Excellence and Innovation in the Daphne Cockwell Health Sciences Complex in 2019 and the university has launched the Classroom Standards and Improvements Planning Initiative to enhance learning and teaching environments. She also helped shepherd the Juris Doctor program through the stages of program development.
Marcia’s contributions will have a lasting impact on Ryerson.
