The Navigate TMU Program was developed to support students in feeling more confident in their first year and more knowledgeable of the skills and resources to navigate university. You will have access to six online modules to explore who you are, what you need and want out of your university experience, and how you can accomplish your goals.

Open to all students, the Program is designed primarily for first-year undergraduate students. This includes students coming to TMU from high school, another post-secondary institution or a bridging program at the university.

For the Summer synchronous program: Approximately 3 hours per week: 1-2 hours asynchronously + 1.5 hours in-person on campus.
For asynchronous access: 1-2 hours of your time and energy per module.

The program is offered in two ways:

  • Synchronous in-person: a free program that goes through the topics in order, with weekly in-person Learning Groups where you will meet other students and reflect on your learning together. Once you register for the program, you will receive the program schedule including deadlines to complete each lesson and information on the Learning Groups.
  • Asynchronous: Free access to all six D2L modules. Check out any of the topics on your own, whenever you need it, when it's relevant to you.

If you complete all requirements of the program including the 6 modules on D2L Brightspace and attendance at the Learning Group sessions, you will receive a certificate to recognize your efforts. All students will be invited to a program graduation to celebrate this achievement!

You will learn about the following topics:

  • Navigating University Your Way - From first year to graduation, the university experience will look different for everyone. In this module, explore your strengths, interests and goals.

  • Navigating your Identity - Explore who you are as an individual, a student, and a community member and how the layers of your identity align with your needs and goals.

  • Navigating the Systems & Structures - By understanding the university’s policies and procedures, you will learn when it is important to advocate for your needs and rights as a student.

  • Navigating your Learning - Develop your own learning strategies and understand what works best for you so you can be confident in your academic performance and proud of your accomplishments.

  • Navigating your Wellbeing - Many students in their first year will feel a mix of emotions and need to find new ways to cope with this transition. There will be highs and lows, so it's important to learn strategies to maintain your health and wellbeing as you conquer your studies.

  • Navigating your Community - No matter what stage of life you are coming from, building a community will help you find a sense of belonging in your university experience and show you new communication skills and perspectives.

Plus, get tips and resources, and meet new friends and the TMU staff who are ready to help you make the most of your year!
