Spotlight
You never know where life will take you. In the 1990s, when Mohamad Jaber was working as a part-time engineering management instructor at the American University of Beirut and the Lebanese American University, a colleague asked him to do some analysis for a paper. “It had never occurred to me to do research,” he recalls. “But I discovered I love it.”
Inspired by that experience, Jaber decided to pursue a PhD part time at the University of Nottingham in England while continuing to live and work in Beirut. “For five academic years, I would submit my students’ final grades and then fly to England to spend the summer conducting research for my doctorate.”
Jaber has since generated novel ideas that bridge mechanical and industrial engineering in areas such as worker learning and forgetting, inventory management and sustainable supply chains. “I’m so glad I found research,” he says. “It’s a source of continuous enjoyment for me.”
“By borrowing concepts from mechanical and industrial engineering, we can enhance management thinking.”
