Language and Culture Auxiliar in Spain

Erica Williams (class of 2023) shares her experience as a Language and Culture Auxiliar in Torre del Mar, Spain.

During my undergraduate studies in Language and Intercultural Relations (Spanish stream) at TMU, I always had the desire to complement my academic learning with travel. I wanted to enhance my proficiency in Spanish, experience living abroad, and immerse myself in a new culture. Through NALCAP (North American Language and Culture Assistants Program) I was able to do just that. This program provided me with the opportunity to teach English in a Spanish-speaking country, which not only deepened my understanding of language dynamics but also allowed me to forge meaningful connections with the local community. Living and working abroad challenged me to adapt to new environments and communicate effectively across cultural boundaries. These experiences enriched my perspective and reinforced my passion for language and intercultural relations.

I received my regional placement in Andalucia, allowing me to pick both the school and the town where I wanted to live. I chose a quiet beach town called Torre del Mar, just a 40-minute bus ride from Malaga's city center. Embracing life in a smaller community provided me with lower expenses for both rent and daily necessities. Smaller towns also foster a tight-knit community, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the Spanish lifestyle. Life here is much slower than the typical Canadian lifestyle. Every day from 2 pm to 5 pm is the “siesta” when most stores close and the same goes for all day Sunday. Even though at first this was quite a cultural shock, I have come to embrace the relaxed lifestyle. My role as an auxiliary entails four days of work per week, a total of 14 hours. As I work in a high school, my students range from 13 to 17 years old. The students are always eager to learn about my background, making every day an exciting adventure in cultural exchange. Through my role as an auxiliary, I not only teach English but also serve as a cultural ambassador, promoting an appreciation for diversity. It's incredibly rewarding to witness the progress and growth of my students as they develop linguistic proficiency and cultural awareness.

This program has afforded me a remarkable chance to deeply engage with Spanish culture and language through my work with students and also the flexibility for enriching travel experiences across Europe. Undoubtedly, this opportunity has been transformative, shaping my perspective and identity in profound ways. I wholeheartedly recommend this program as it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for anyone seeking personal growth before entering graduate studies or the professional realm.
