Catherine Gaughan completed her PhD specializing in French Literature and Cinema at the University of Toronto and is currently teaching French language, culture, and business courses across all levels at Toronto Metropolitan University. Pensionnaire étrangère at the École Normale Supérieure de Paris where she studied for a year, Dr. Gaughan has also worked as a lecturer at the École Normale Supérieure Lettres et Sciences Humaines de Lyon before accepting a teaching position at the Université du Havre in France.

Dr. Gaughan is active in the academic cultural scene through her work for The French Review in a variety of fields related to 19th- and 20th-century Francophone arts, history, and culture. Her monograph entitled La poésie et le cinéma de Jean Cocteau et de Jacques Prévert des années trente et quarante (external link)  published in 2022 focuses on the representation of objects in their works from esthetic, filmic, and phenomenological perspectives. She is currently developing a new book exploring coming of age narratives and notions of belonging in contemporary French and Francophone cinema and TV series.
