Live Actor Simulation
For over 25 years, the team behind Live Actor Simulation (LAS) has dedicated itself to providing innovative, high-quality, professionally relevant skills development to the internal Toronto Metropolitan community and external clients. LAS is part of the EL Hub. We work closely with clients to build and deliver live performance-based simulations that target specific learning objectives, enhance professional development and support a variety of performance assessment models. Live Actor Simulation is a unique example of EL at Toronto Metropolitan University.
We collaborate with faculty, staff, and external clients to design and deliver authentic experiences that mirror an academic or professional environment. The LAS system of immediate, behaviour-based feedback provides a personal and professional relevant opportunity for reflection resulting in a lasting impact on learners’ behaviours and skill development.
Live Actor Simulations are re-enactments of events during face-to-face interactions with clients, patients, consumers, or employees in the workplace. Unlike role-play exercises or virtual programs, live actor simulations involve highly skilled actors, called simulators, trained to portray a character’s history, personality, and physical/emotional state.
A simulation is more powerful than role-play or case study assignments. Participants interact with simulators in real-time, in a realistic atmosphere, with low risk to individuals. Unlike other forms of EL, the simulator plays a predetermined role familiar only to the simulator and the facilitator. When interacting with the simulator, learners employ interpersonal skills appropriate to the situation. Immediate feedback offered by the simulator allows each participant to reflect on their interpersonal abilities. Through this process, learners have an opportunity to internalize knowledge and skills that they are subsequently able to apply to their professional careers.
For examples of Live Actor Simulations, check out our simulation catalogue (opens in new window) , which houses over 100 simulation scenarios and interactive workshops designed to meet a broad range of learning, teaching and professional development objectives. In addition to booking pre-existing scenarios, we offer custom-designed simulations to meet your specific learning needs.
Why Choose Us?
LAS can be used to teach, evaluate, and challenge. We provide a wide range of experiences allowing learners to practice their interviewing, supervisory, group leadership, and team-building skills. Because the simulations are standardized and repeatable, they can assess a learner’s skill and knowledge over time. Each simulation can meet various objectives, allowing for a broader application of skills.
