A passion for equity

Teshager Kefale

Dr. Teshager Kefale is a biochemist and synthetic biologist, dedicated to reshaping the landscape of health research and development through an equity lens. He specializes in the fields of cancer research, biochemistry and synthetic biology with a specific focus on triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells of African ancestry.

His work explores the relationship between ethnic origins and distinct signaling networks, creating pathways to identify potential targets for therapeutic interventions. By investigating TNBC cell lines and specific biological and genetic factors in Black women, he aims to identify and characterize differential signaling networks, ensuring that Black patients receive optimal care and eliminating disparities in cancer treatment.

Under the guidance of his supervisor, Dr. Roberto Botelho, a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair specializing in metabolic and signaling pathways in cancer cells, and in collaboration with Dr. Costin Antonescu, an expert in signaling dynamics and metabolic regulation of TNBC, this fellowship enables Dr. Kefale access to the necessary resources at TMU’s MaRS Discovery District facilities to ensure the success of his research. His work is poised to make a substantial contribution to advancing equity in the field of health research and development.

Dr. Kefale is the founder and chief technology officer of Biofect Innovations, an award-winning start-up working towards the production of healthier, more sustainable proteins.
