Welcome to the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University! We are located in the downtown core of Toronto, one of the World’s most diverse and vibrant cities. Our location in the neighbourhood, city and broader region provides a living laboratory that supports our core mission of advancing excellence and diversity in geographic scholarship.

Engagement and collaboration with community partners, application of advanced geotechnologies, and getting outside are ingrained in our practice. We take to the city’s streets, parks and ravines, community centres, the Arctic, and beyond to understand how human activities and different environments interact and change. Our students take part in local and international field trips and benefit from experiential learning opportunities such as the direct entry co-op program in Geographic Analysis. Our classes and programs focus on applied learning and problem-solving, preparing students for a wide range of careers.

Please explore our knowledgeable people, programs of study, and activities.

Think you know geography? Think again! Meet one of our Professors, Dr. Cheryl Rogers, and learn how our students use Geographic Information Systems to understand and solve issues in our environments and cities.

The BA in Geographic Analysis (previously Applied Geography) was the first standalone degree program at TMU and we recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with students, alumni, industry and government partners, and university leaders helping us mark this special moment.
