Systems Setup and Troubleshooting

Use this information to help avoid and/or troubleshoot the most common technical issues in the Financial Information System (FIS or Oracle) and the Invoice Approval System (MarkView).

Supported browsers

  • Mozilla Firefox ESR (latest version recommended)
  • Apple Safari 15 (recommended for web based functionalities, including iExpense/iProcurement)
  • Microsoft Edge (latest version)
  • Google Chrome (latest version)

Browser and application setup

If you are working in the financial systems and are experiencing technical issues, please review these settings as a first step towards troubleshooting.

As the financial systems rely on Java in order to run forms, the two Java-supported browsers we recommend are Firefox ESR and Microsoft Edge.

Mozilla Firefox ESR

You can verify your Mozilla Firefox browser version by selecting Firefox > About Firefox from the browser menu. The pop-up window will indicate your version.

Note: Firefox ESR is available for both Windows and Mac operating systems. The latest release of Firefox ESR is the recommended version, but earlier versions are still acceptable.

Microsoft Edge

You can verify your Edge browser version by selecting Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.

Note: This browser is only available on Windows operating systems.

Google Chrome

You can verify your Chrome browser version by selecting Menu > Settings > About Chrome.

Note: On Windows operating systems, Chrome will load the forms and the HTML pages.  On Mac operating systems, Chrome will only load the HTML pages.

Make sure pop-up windows are allowed/enabled in your browser permissions.

Windows users

Mozilla Firefox
  • From your Firefox browser window, select the menu option Tools > Options.
  • Select the Content tab from the Options window.
  • Uncheck the Block Pop-Up Windows box.

Alternatively, to block pop-ups entirely:

  • From your Firefox browser window, select the menu option Tools > Options.
  • Select the Privacy and security panel.
  • Under the Permissions section, uncheck the box next to Block pop-up windows to disable.
Microsoft Edge
  • From your Microsoft Edge browser window, select Settings (accessed by clicking on the three horizontal dots and finding settings in the menu options).
  • Select Cookies and site permissions.
  • Under All permissions select Pop-ups and redirects.
  • Below the Block (recommended) button, check to see if Java or links to any TMU financial systems are blocked and grant them pop-up access.
    • You may review a list of websites permitted to launch pop-up windows under Allow. You may also manually add website URLs permitted to launch pop-up windows by clicking Add.

Mac users

Mozilla Firefox
  • Select Firefox from your browser menu and choose Preferences.
  • Select the Privacy and Security option from the Preferences window. Scroll to the Permissions section.
  • Uncheck the Block Pop-Up Windows box.
Apple Safari
  • Select Safari from your browser menu and choose Preferences from the dropdown menu to access the General Preferences dialog box.
  • Select the Security tab to open the Security Preferences window.
  • In the Web Content section, uncheck the Block Pop-Up Windows box.

If you have issues accessing the systems while using Mozilla Firefox, you may need to adjust the security settings. Make sure the financial systems are indicated as trusted sites in your Firefox browser by doing the following:

  1. From your Firefox browser menu, select the menu option Tools > Options.
  2. Select Security.
  3. Select Exceptions.
  4. In the Address of Website field, enter the following URLs:
  5. Click the Allow button after each URL is added.
  6. Click the Save Changes button.

In order to access the reporting, budget and inquiry (General Ledger) options in FIS, Java needs to be installed on your computer, which will allow a Java applet to run.  Acceptable Java versions are Java 8 Update 431. Please visit www.java.com (external link)  to download Java.

Once you select your general ledger menu option in FIS, you will be prompted to open or save a Java applet. Click on Save and then Open to launch the FIS General Ledger forms or FIS Reports options.

The Java version and updates that are tested and recommended for FIS compatibility are Java 8 Update 391. If your Java version is outdated, you may encounter difficulties. You can check your Java version by visiting the Verify Java Version page (external link) .

Windows users

If you're using the Mozilla Firefox ESR browser, the Java applet (JNLP file) may not always recognize the Java web launcher needed to start FIS forms. To correct this, please select the Open menu > Options > General section > Applications > Find the JNLP file and change the action from "Save" to "Use Java web launcher".

Mac users

If you're using the Mozilla Firefox ESR, the Java applet (JNLP file) may not always recognize the Java web launcher needed to start FIS forms. To correct this:

  • In your Firefox browser, select the Tools menu > Options > General > Applications > Find JNLP file and change the action to "Java web start".

Once complete, open FIS and select "GL responsibility" to launch the forms.

Troubleshooting

FIS (Oracle) and the Invoice Approval System (MarkView) are on a restricted network, which means that users can only access these systems while connected to the TMU administrative network. If you are either working off-campus, using a wireless connection or using the TMU academic network, you need to be logged in to TMU’s virtual private network (TMU-VPN) or the systems will not work. Learn more about the TMU-VPN, including how to request, extend or terminate access.

To reset your systems password, click the Login Assistant link located on the FIS login page or contact the FIS Help Desk. You may be required to provide information that will verify your identity.

When new windows do not open as expected, it is often due to browser settings. To troubleshoot, try the following:

  • Open your browser settings and verify that pop-ups and the Java applet are not blocked.
  • Clear your browser's cache and log in to FIS again.
  • Confirm that the correct version of Java is installed (Java 8 Update 431).
