Toronto MetRobotics second-highest-ranked Canadian team at the renowned University Rover Challenge.

Students’ Mars rover design lands team top-14 finish, out of 104 international participants.
June 26, 2024

The student-led Toronto MetRobotics (TMR) team recently competed in the prestigious University Rover Challenge (URC) held in Hanksville, Utah. Organized by the Mars Society, the summer competition attracts university-level design teams from around the world to design and build rovers intended to assist early explorers on Mars.

The TMR team has participated in URC for the past five years, working tirelessly to improve its rover’s design, adding new features and capabilities to enhance its performance. Their enhancements led them to new highs in 2024, placing 14th overall out of 36 finalists and 104 participants, and 2nd overall for Canadian teams.

About the team

A multidisciplinary robotics collective based at TMU, TMR’s goal is to inspire and equip students with essential practical skills that will benefit them in their future careers. The team is comprised of students from various faculties, who design, develop, and manufacture competitive robots together. Outside of competitions, they share their knowledge on current robotics topics like artificial intelligence through workshops and seminars on campus and at local high schools. They also run a Representation in Robotics initiative, profiling professionals making waves in the technology and science fields.

Interested in joining the team?

Robotics is for everyone! TMR is on the lookout for members for all their sub-teams (such as science, mechanical, media, outreach, software, etc.), regardless of academic backgrounds. Recruitment opens in Fall 2024 and interested students can email tmr@torontomu.ca or visit https://teamtmr.ca/ (external link)  (external link) .
