The Honourable George W. Vari Friendship Awards

The Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science is proud to offer four annual awards, each valued at $5,000, specifically for FEAS graduate students. The Honourable George W. Vari Friendship Awards, in honour of President Lachemi, are available to full-time FEAS graduate students who demonstrate one of the following: a) civic leadership in engineering, or b) diversity. 

Adjudication

The Awards Selection Committee for each award will comprise at least three representatives from the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science and the Dean. The Awards Selection Committee will review the applications and make the final selection of the recipient based on the criteria. If no applicants meet the outlined criteria in the selection committee’s opinion, the award shall not be given to any applicant that year.


Award #1: The Honourable George W. Vari Friendship Award, in honour of President Lachemi (Civic Leadership in Engineering)

In recognition of the late Honourable George W. Vari’s commitment to civic responsibility, the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science is pleased to offer two awards for civic leadership in engineering. These awards are available to graduate students who have demonstrated leadership in serving the community.

To be considered for this award, students must meet the following criteria at the time of application:

  • Be registered as a full-time student in a FEAS graduate program. 
  • Be in good academic standing.

Student applicants must include the following documents in their award application:

  1. A written statement (500-750 words) that demonstrates their impact as a leader in one of the following areas:
    • Allyship with marginalized communities
    • Community engagement
    • Engineering to advance social justice
  2. An unofficial transcript
  3. A current resume 

Applications for the award for the 2024/2025 academic year should be submitted by Friday, November 22nd, 2024 and students can apply via Award Spring. (external link) 

Award #2: The Honourable George W. Vari Friendship Award, in honour of President Lachemi (Diversity)

In recognition of the late Honourable George Vari’s contribution to Canada through his support of education, research and philanthropy following his immigration from Hungary in 1957, the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science is pleased to offer two awards for diversity.  These awards are available to graduate students from traditionally underrepresented groups, including women, Black and Racialized students, international students, students with disabilities and Indigenous students.

 

To be considered for this award, students must meet the following criteria at the time of application:

  • Identify as from one of the traditionally underrepresented groups noted in the fund overview.
  • Be registered as a full-time student in a FEAS graduate program. 
  • Be in good academic standing.

Student applicants must include the following documents in their award application:

  1. A written statement (500-750 words) that demonstrates their commitment to promoting diversity within the fields of engineering and architectural science.
  2. An unofficial transcript 
  3. A current resume  

Applications for the award for the 2024/2025 academic year should be submitted by Friday, November 22nd, 2024 and students can apply via Award Spring. (external link)
