Creating a shared framework for equity, diversity and inclusion

At Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) values are essential to our mission of academic excellence and social responsibility. TMU is a recognized leader in embedding EDI values and practices into the university’s core functions.

The EDI Strategy and Action Plan will provide a framework for equity, diversity and inclusion across the university. Once complete, this strategy and plan will outline priorities and actions to drive meaningful EDI progress.

Your input will define the future of EDI at TMU

This project will be stronger with active participation from students, faculty and staff.

When students, faculty, and staff get involved, we can make a real difference in tackling exclusion and driving meaningful change at TMU. Working together, we’ll help build a stronger, more inclusive community, one where everyone’s knowledge, commitment, and collaboration lead to clear, measurable results. Everyone at TMU, students, faculty, and staff, has a role to play in this process, and we welcome your participation.

Project scope

This initiative will build on existing EDI efforts, leveraging our knowledge and experience to create a more unified, impactful approach. Together, we will define a clear vision and priorities for the next five years, ensuring measurable progress through accountability and meaningful collaborations.

There will be two rounds of community engagement: a campus-wide survey in Fall 2024, followed by targeted sessions with equity-deserving groups, campus leaders and student groups in Winter 2025 to define strategy and high-impact action. All participation will determine how the advancement of EDI can support the university’s vision and will outline priorities to drive meaningful, lasting change.

All students, faculty and staff are invited to complete the  (google form) engagement survey (external link)  by December 4, 2024.

Building on our shared success

EDI have been core values at TMU for over a decade, reflected in university-wide plans, policies and departmental initiatives. EDI is not just a priority — it’s a commitment embedded in the fabric of our institution.

TMU has previously engaged with community members through initiatives that advanced our work in truth and reconciliation, confronting anti-Black racism and the university’s renaming efforts. These efforts have deepened our understanding of diverse community values, priorities and concerns, guiding our EDI journey.

TMU is poised to take the next step, creating a university-wide framework that aligns EDI principles and actions. By fostering collaboration and coordination, we will drive high-impact initiatives that advance our shared EDI goals.
