Graduation Award Document Reissues

You can request a replacement for graduation award documents that have been lost, damaged, or destroyed, or if your legal name has changed.

A graduation award document is an official university-issued document. As such, only one original award document may exist and it must reflect your true and correct personal legal/official name.

Your name, as it appears on your official university student record, will be the name that will be printed onto your reissued award document. Please ensure your name is updated on your academic record prior to submitting your application. Should you wish to make changes to your name, please see Personal Information Change Requests (opens in new window) .

All replacement and amended graduation award documents will be produced using current Toronto Metropolitan University graphics, printing standards and signatures.

The fee is $70 (subject to change) plus an additional courier fee (if courier service is selected).

Your record will be reviewed to confirm your graduation status, and if eligible, a replacement document will be produced. This process can take up to 6 to 8 weeks.

If you graduated before 1984, email gradinfo@torontomu.ca for application information.

Reissued award documents that are not retrieved (couriered or picked up) within one year of the date of the reissue date, will be destroyed. This includes any documents that may have been couriered by request but are returned as being undeliverable.

Can’t remember your student number? Complete the  (google form) TMU student number recovery form (external link) .

Reason for request:

  • Lost or damaged your original graduation award document (diploma/degree/certificate)
  • You have had a legal name change since the time you graduated

If the request is due to a legal/official name change and you want this name to appear on the re-issued award document, you must submit proper documentation to substantiate the name change. Please refer to Personal Information Change Requests (opens in new window)  for more details.

A replacement document is regarded as an original award document. The document will indicate the original conferred date and the replacement reissued date with the statement: “issued to replace original.”

For example:

June 2005
Issued to replace original August 2014

Reason for request:

  • Have your award document amended to reflect the new degree designation of the program from which you graduated (for example, you graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Arts that has since changed to a Bachelor of Arts).

    OR
  • Have your award document reissued under the name of Toronto Metropolitan University (applies to all alumni who graduated from Ryerson Institute of Technology, Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, Ryerson Polytechnic University, or Ryerson University).

An amended document is regarded as an original award document which will reflect the updated degree designation and/or program name.  An amended award document will only be issued if eligibility requirements are met.

An amended document will indicate the original conferred date and the amended reissued date with the statement: “issued to replace original.”

For example:

June 2005
Issued to replace original August 2014

If you are not eligible for an amendment, you will receive a Replacement document (see above definition) of your original award.

The Registrar’s Office does not certify copies of Award documents. If you require a degree copy to be notarized you may look into the Legal Services (external link)  offered by the Toronto Metropolitan Students Union or search for a notary that is authorized to operate in your area. A notary public is a person who witnesses oaths, signs affidavits and certifies documents to be true copies of the original.

TMU is pleased to provide you with the option to receive a gender neutral degree designation printed on your undergraduate or graduate degree award document.

What this means: Instead of the standard nomenclature, you may elect to have your graduation award document produced/printed and reissued with the alternate language as noted here:

‘Baccalaureate’ instead of Bachelor (for Bachelor’s degrees)
‘Magisteriate’ instead of Master (for Master’s degrees)
‘Doctorate’ instead of Doctor (for Doctor’s degrees)

Please note:

1. Only one graduation award document will be printed and released (i.e. either using the standard language or the gender neutral language).
2. Only the graduation award document will show the alternate degree designation – all other student records (i.e. official student transcript) will indicate the standard degree nomenclature.
