CERC Migration Winter School: Qualitative Research Methods

CERC Migration is proud to announce the inaugural Winter School, held from February 18–21, 2025, at Toronto Metropolitan University. Applications are due Dec. 12, 2024.

The CERC Migration Winter School is a week-long learning opportunity that offers intensive research methodological training for graduate students, emerging scholars and practitioners. The program includes hands-on courses in a small class setting, in-depth dialogue and mentorship from experienced researchers, and site visits to immigration and settlement non-profit and cultural organizations. Located at the CERC Migration offices in downtown Toronto, Ontario, this unique programming provides participants with opportunities to connect with a dynamic research community, learn from other graduate students, develop their research methods skills, and receive constructive feedback on their research projects. 

Attendees will receive a certificate of completion.

Cost

General: $500 CAD 

Students and research staff at Toronto Metropolitan University: $350; Researchers/Students at IMISCOE Member Institutes (external link) : $350

Who can apply?

The Winter School is open to graduate students, emerging scholars, faculty, as well as practitioners from the non-profit, private sector or national and international organizations.

What does the Winter School entail?  

The Winter School includes four in-person courses focusing on: qualitative interviewing, NVivo data analysis, Tableau visualization analysis, and systematic reviews. Each course includes a Q&A session with senior researchers to provide practical how-to guidance on collecting data in the field and navigating various research challenges. The NVivo course includes a hands-on NVivo Clinic that will also provide students with an opportunity to receive one-on-one advice and coaching on their existing projects using NVivo software. In the afternoon, students will be led on site visits to nonprofit or cultural organizations within Toronto. Lunch and refreshments are provided each day. 

Day 1 - Qualitative Interviewing Part 1: Design, recruitment, ethics and conducting; Part 2: Coding, identifying themes and reporting your findings

Day 2 - NVivo Fundamentals 1&2

Day 3 - Introduction to Tableau

Day 4 - Performing Systematic Reviews: Introduction and Best Practices

How to apply?

Applicants must submit a short CV (maximum four pages) and cover letter (maximum two pages) to the online form. The cover letter should describing the following:

  • Short outline of your research interests;
  • Why you want to attend the CERC Migration Winter School and how it will benefit your studies/work/research. Any prior experience with research methods and how they apply to your research.
