Research focus while a CERC Scholar - Mobilities and borders in the Andean borders (Chile, Peru and Bolivia): a south-north dialogue

Marcela's participation in the Scholar of Excellence Research of the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration (CERC Migration) has the purpose of sharing research experiences on mobility, borders and pandemics in the American South Cone and the global North. In the last ten years she has been researching migration and border mobility in northern Chile, identifying cross-border social flows and practices between Chile, Peru and Bolivia. For this reason, during her stay at CERC Migration she is interested in learning from the Canadian experience on the issues we work on in common, as well as from other cases that have been addressed at the center. It is of particular interest to her to share the learning and challenges left by the COVID-19 pandemic regarding border management and human mobility.

Career Achievements

Marcela Tapia Ladino is a professor of History and Geography (1993) and a Magister in History (1999) from the University of Concepción and a PhD in Contemporary Latin America from the Complutense University of Madrid and the Ortega y Gasset University Research Institute (2010). She directed the Institute of International Studies INTE in two periods (2014-2021), she directed Si Somos Americanos Revista de Estudios Crossborders (2014-2021) and the Master in International Relations and Crossborder Studies (2016-2020). She is currently the Director of the Doctorate in Transborder Studies at the Institute of International Studies. Her research topics are borders, mobilities and gender on which she has written numerous articles in mainstream journals and peer reviewed books and book chapters. She has led FONDECYT research projects and participated in FONIDE, ECOS-CONICYT, Anillos research projects as well as in international projects with Peru, England, Spain and Canada.
