Communications Infrastructure

Communications Infrastructure provides support to Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Faculty, Staff and students. There are three groups that make up the Communications Infrastructure team:

  • Communication Infrastructure Services
  • Network & IT Security Services
  • Telecommunications

Telecommunications services group provides a voice services infrastructure for the TMU community, including setting up new phones, voicemail/unified messaging or teleconferencing. The group provides day-to-day operational support for TMU schools and departments including:

  • Setting up new voice services
  • Maintenance, support and repair of voice service infrastructure
  • Individual and departmental long distance and telephony hardware cost allocation reports

The Telecommunications services group helps setup call centers throughout the campus and designs phone implementation installations for new units.

The Network & IT-Security provides the network infrastructure to TMU community and maintains the security of the data flowing into this infrastructure. The network comprises of the wired and wireless connectivity options and as well the connectivity to the Internet through multiple ISPs. Guest access through “Edu-roam” global network is also available. The network is constantly monitored to ensure availability and as well to mitigate against the constant cyber-attacks against Toronto Metropolitan University’s assets.

The team also offers remote access options to faculty & staff, load balancing and digital certificates for servers and Anti-Virus software for staff and students’ computers.

The Network & IT Security staff have a wide range of expertise in the field of network design, vulnerability assessments and forensic analysis. They can assist the TMU community in these areas whenever needed. The goal of this team is to enable the use of IT is a secure and reliable fashion to serve TMU’s educational mission.

Toronto Metropolitan University’s Communication Infrastructure Services (CIS) provides campus departments with the design, implementation, maintenance and repair of intra and inter-building structured cabling of horizontal, vertical riser cabling, and backbone cabling. Structured cabling infrastructure enables the transport of voice, data, and video over various copper and fiber optic media supporting network speeds of up to 100 Gigabit/sec. These services include telephone, TMUnet connections, wireless and Electronic Safety and Security (ESS), including Video Surveillance, Access Control, Intrusion Detection and Emergency Communications.

Toronto Metropolitan University has over 300 singlemode fiber optic cables to serve the buildings contained within the Campus Area Network. Over 20 km of singlemode fiber optic cable has been installed in both level one and level two backbone meeting the campus communities’ technology needs. CIS also designs, installs and maintains several hundred Telecommunications Rooms throughout the campus.

CIS provides a comprehensive approach to providing high quality, standards based wiring infrastructure in adherence to TMU University’s Division 27 Communication Specifications. These standards and guidelines have been formatted in accordance with the Construction Specifications Institute 2004 MasterFormat and are based on current industry standards, BICSI best practices and Ontario building, fire and electrical codes.

CIS’s mission is to effectively respond to all service and delivery requests for Structured Cabling. CIS will ensure that cable installation practices are fulfilled in a quality manner.
