In addition, to correct the conditions of disadvantage in employment in Canada, we encourage applications from members of groups that have been historically disadvantaged and marginalized, including First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples, Indigenous peoples of North America, racialized persons, persons with disabilities, and those who identify as women and/or 2SLGBTQ+. Please note that all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, applications from Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

As an employer, we are working towards a people first culture and are proud to have been selected as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers and a Greater Toronto’s Top Employer for 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. The opportunity

Applications are invited for a 1-year, full-time Post-Doctoral Research Fellow position (with a possibility of renewal) to work with Principal Investigators (PIs) Prof. Nariman Yousefi in the Department of Chemical Engineering, and Prof. Marco Antoniades in the Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering. The candidate will assist in the characterization and development of microwave absorber materials in collaboration with our industry partner, 3G Shielding Specialties, and will have access to state-of-the art computing and lab facilities, including the newly-established 3G Shielding Materials Lab at TMU. The candidate will work closely with the PIs and the industry partner to:

  • Set up a standardized testing system to measure the reflectivity, absorption, and complex material parameters of planar microwave absorber materials.
  • Test existing absorber materials that are available as part of the industry partner’s commercial product lines.
  • Characterize and reverse engineer the formulations of existing absorber materials to extract the morphology of the materials, their chemical composition, and physical properties.
  • Develop and characterize new microwave absorber materials using novel additives (e.g. graphene) that are commercially available.

The candidate will be expected to work mostly in person at the TMU downtown Toronto campus. The position is available for an immediate start.

Qualifications

The following qualifications and skills are required:

  • PhD in electrical, chemical, or materials engineering, or related area
  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • Knowledge of material measurement and characterization techniques
  • Experience using electromagnetic simulation software, such as ANSYS HFSS, COMSOL
  • Experience working with microwave equipment, such as vector network analyzers, impedance analyzers, dielectric probe kits, material measurement systems
  • Experience in a wet lab environment
  • Experience with polymer processing

The following skills will be considered an asset and are highly desirable:

  • Knowledge of microwave absorption mechanisms and materials
  • Knowledge of EMI shielding techniques
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team
  • Excellent English language communication skills (both verbal and written)

How to apply
