Interim Assistant Dean, Learner Progress

About the School of Medicine

It’s time to transform medical education. Toronto Metropolitan University’s School of Medicine is being designed to shift the paradigm of healthcare delivery and improve the well-being of individuals, families and communities. The opportunity

The Assistant Dean, Learner Progress is a member of the School of Medicine (SoM) clinical faculty, overseeing and directing the Competence Committee within the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program. Committed to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility, the Assistant Dean, Learner Progress shares responsibility with the SoM senior management team in the overall strategic planning, development, delivery and improvement of learner progress, competency assessment, and individualized learning pathways and processes in the SoM cognizant of ongoing changes in medical education.

In addition, the Assistant Dean chairs the UGME Competence Committee and the UGME Student Progress Subcommittee, along with its subsidiary working groups. Reporting to both the Education Section Council and relevant Program Councils for UGME and PGME, the Assistant Dean ensures alignment and effective communication across key stakeholders.

Qualifications

Minimum level of education and specialty/discipline required

  • Completion of a Doctor of Medicine Medical Degree or equivalent.
  • Must be eligible to hold an appointment at a TMU medicine affiliated clinical partner institution or academic health centre.
  • Masters or equivalent (e.g. Royal College Diploma in Clinician Educator domain) in health professions education, data analytics, research methods, or other evaluation- or assessment-related field.
  • Training in Bias, Anti-Racism, and Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility, Indigenous Decolonization and Indigenous Reconciliation.

Minimum number of years and type/area of experience required given minimum education requirement

  • A minimum of three to five (3-5) years of experience in their field of medicine
  • Must have evidence of administrative and leadership responsibilities in a Medical School educational activity or health care leadership.
  • Must have or be eligible for an appointment to the TMU Clinical Faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher.

Required certifications, designation or licences to complete the key responsibilities of the position

  • All candidates must be certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) or by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or another equivalent medical board certification.
  • Holds a valid and current licence to practise medicine in Ontario or another Canadian jurisdiction at the time of application.
  • For interim positions, the candidate must be eligible to apply for an independent licence to practise medicine in Ontario by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), but may hold a similar licence in another Canadian jurisdiction. Successful candidates for a term position must hold a licence to practise medicine in Ontario from the CPSO within 12 months of assuming the role

Required skills and demonstrated knowledge

  • Knowledge and understanding of Canadian medical schools and the Canadian medical profession; knowledge and understanding of medical education innovations; knowledge of CaRMs;
  • Knowledge of various medical disciplines, related university programs and professional associations; 
  • Overall knowledge of the post-secondary system in Ontario and abroad;
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills;
  • Strong communication and organization skills;
  • Strong conflict resolution skills;
  • Demonstrated success working in collaborative in-person and virtual teams;
  • Ability to meet pressured and tight deadlines and outcomes;
  • Knowledge of and and training in Indigenous History and culture;
  • Knowledge and preferably training in the principles and practices to deliver Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in medicine and post secondary education.

Physical Effort

  • This position requires routine physical activity most of the time. The incumbent is frequently using a computer/technology while composing and preparing reports, documents and letters for extended periods of time. Physical movement may also be required for extended periods of time while participating in special events.

Working Conditions

  • The majority of the incumbent's time is spent in an office environment. The incumbent is required to meet multiple and conflicting deadlines on a regular ongoing basis.
