About the School of Medicine

It’s time to transform medical education. Toronto Metropolitan University’s School of Medicine is being designed to shift the paradigm of healthcare delivery and improve the well-being of individuals, families and communities. With a community-driven, intentionally inclusive approach, the new school will train doctors whose cultural awareness and humility are as crucial as their medical skills.

Led by Dr. Teresa M. Chan, a forward-thinking educational leader, TMU’s School of Medicine will draw on the university’s commitment to community, equity, and innovation to address rapidly changing healthcare needs. The school will train a new generation of physicians who are ready to learn, to adapt, and ultimately to be agents of change.

Work across the School of Medicine will be supported by its Section of Community, Culture and Belonging to ensure a focus on Black community health, Indigenous community health, anti-racism (including anti-Black racism, anti-Asian racism, anti-Indigenous racism, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia), anti-ableism, disability inclusion and universal design, anti-homophobia and transphobia, to create a positive health environment for LGBTQ2SI+, and to serve and work in partnership with historically under-represented and under-served communities as a positive space.

The opportunity

The Assistant Dean, Primary Care Education (Asst. Dean, PCE) is a member of the Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) School of Medicine (SoM) clinical faculty, overseeing and directing the Family Medicine and Enhanced Skills Residency Programs. 

Committed to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility, Anti-Racism & Reconciliation, Decolonization, and Indigenous Resurgence (EDIAA-RDIR), the Asst. Dean, PCE shares responsibility with the SoM senior management team in the overall strategic planning, development, and delivery of the Family Medicine and Enhanced Skills Programs. 

The Assistant Dean also ensures alignment with accreditation standards of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and develops primary care training capacity in collaboration with the Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME), Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME), and Distributed Medical Education (DME) programs. 

Qualifications

Minimum level of education and specialty/discipline required

  • Completion of a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent medical degree, preferably with advanced qualifications in medical education or healthcare measurement (e.g., MSc or MEd). A Diplomate in the Clinician Educator Area of Focused Competence will be considered equivalent to master’s level qualification.

Minimum number of years and type/area of experience required

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in their field with evidence of administrative responsibilities in a medical school educational activity.
  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience as a practicing Family Physician, preferably with a background in delivering medical education and clinical faculty development.
  • Hold or be eligible to hold an appointment at a TMU medicine-affiliated clinical partner institution or academic health centre.
  • Must hold or be eligible for an appointment to the TMU Clinical Faculty at the rank of Assistant Clinical Professor or higher.

Required certifications, designation or licenses to complete the key responsibilities of the position

  • All candidates must be certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) or by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
  • Must hold a licence to practise medicine in Ontario from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) within one year of starting the role.

Required skills and demonstrated knowledge

  • Advanced training, expertise, and/or demonstrated leadership experience focused on equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives within the educational or health care setting.
  • Effective administrative and leadership responsibilities in either medical education or health care.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Canadian medical schools and the Canadian medical profession, including medical education innovations and relevant university programs;
  • Comprehensive understanding of various medical disciplines and professional associations;
  • Evidence of prior national or international-level scholarship in medical education, preferably in faculty development;
  • Overall knowledge of the post-secondary system in Ontario and abroad, supporting a global perspective on educational practices;
  • Strong educational technology skills for developing and supporting innovative educational approaches;
  • Superior conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills, combined with excellent oral and written communication abilities;
  • Deep knowledge of the principles and theory of adult education at local, national, and international levels;
  • Commitment to applying EDIA & RDIR principles in practice, demonstrating the ability to integrate diverse perspectives and experiences using an intersectional approach;
  • Ability to engage in and facilitate difficult conversations, especially related to diversity and inclusion;
  • Knowledge of best practices for strategic program planning and implementation, supporting effective educational program management;
  • Agility in handling multiple projects and assignments, planning, managing, and evaluating programs simultaneously while maintaining strong time management and decision-making skills;
  • Effective presentation skills, comfortable delivering presentations to various group sizes;
  • Creativity, strategic thinking, and innovation, with demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Physical Effort

  • This position requires routine physical activity most of the time. The incumbent is frequently using a computer/technology while composing and preparing reports, documents and letters for extended periods of time. Physical movement may also be required for extended periods of time while participating in special events.

Working Conditions

  • The majority of the incumbent's time is spent in an office environment, but they may be asked to attend/run meetings in an online setting and/or in clinical spaces. The incumbent is required to meet multiple and conflicting deadlines on a regular ongoing basis. 
  • The incumbent may be required to periodically travel for meetings or program delivery.
