Consideration for admission to Advanced Standing (in second year) will be given to students who have the following qualifications:

A Social Service Worker or Human Service(s) Counsellor Diploma (or any diploma from a public Canadian college that is eligible for registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers see Summary of the Criteria for Registration (external link, opens in new window) ), with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 ('B') or higher, and less than two (2) years accumulated, paid, full-time equivalent, relevant work experience in the social services field.

Notes:

1. Successful applicants are required to complete two (2) additional courses from first year as part of their degree requirements, as follows: One (1) lower level liberal studies course, and SWP 331 Social Work Theories of Practice.
2. Successful applicants will receive transfer credit for SWP 36A/B Field Practicum at the time of admission.
3. Given the strong competition applicants will normally be required to present academic averages significantly higher than the minimum.
4. Holders of college diplomas with two years or more accumulated paid, full-time equivalent, relevant work experience in the social services field, must apply to the Advanced Standing Admission – Third Year Entry Option, which is offered on a part-time basis. Please see the Admission Information - Part-Time Program section for details.

Application Procedures

In order to receive equal consideration for the Advanced Standing Admission – Second Year Entry option, applications with complete documentation must be received by Undergraduate Admissions no later than February 1st. Applications received after this date will be considered subject to space availability.

Applicants must arrange the submission of the following to Undergraduate Admissions. Visit Submission of Documents for access to the Document Upload page and instructions:

1. Post-secondary transcripts including promotions/graduation status.
2. A summary of paid, full-time equivalent, relevant work experience in the social services field, in order to confirm that eligibility criteria have been met (less than two years accumulated paid, full-time equivalent, relevant work experience in the social services field). This summary must be included in the Activities/Employment section of the online application form (OUAC or TMU Applications) or the Non-Academic History section of the Supplementary Form.

Admission to the Advanced Standing Admission - Third Year Entry option is in the Fall term only, and is only available on a part-time study basis. The number of students admitted is limited by space availability.

Consideration for admission to Advanced Standing (in third year) will be given to students who have the following qualifications; (A) and (C) or (B) and (C):

(A) A baccalaureate degree in the humanities or social sciences from a Canadian university (or equivalent), with at least (2) years accumulated, paid, full-time equivalent, relevant work experience in the social services field.

or

(B) An eligible college diploma as indicated below, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 ('B') or higher, plus at least two (2) years accumulated, paid, full-time equivalent, relevant work experience in the social services field:

• Child and Youth Care / Child and Youth Worker

(C) Completion of a prerequisite course, CVSW15A/B Foundations of Social Work II with at least a 'B' level grade.

Employment prerequisites must be completed before taking CVSW15A/B. Admission to CVSW15A/B is limited by space availability. Applicants will be pre-selected to take this course by Undergraduate Admissions in conjunction with the School of Social Work. Applicants will be selected based on post-secondary academic performance and employment in the social services field.

Please note: Applicants who hold a diploma from a public Ontario College (or the equivalent) or a baccalaureate degree from an accredited Canadian university (or equivalent) that is not listed above, and who have at least (2) years accumulated, paid, full-time equivalent, relevant work experience in the social services field, may be considered on an individual basis.

Successful college diploma applicants are required to complete four (4) courses, in addition to the third and fourth year curriculum, as part of their degree requirements, as follows: Three (3) liberal studies courses, one (1) lower level and two (2) upper level, and SWP 331 Social Work Theories of Practice.
2. Successful college diploma applicants will receive transfer credit for SWP 36A/B Field Practicum at the time of admission.
   
3. CVSW15A/B course is only offered one time per year, running May - June.
   
4. Given the strong competition applicants will normally be required to present academic averages significantly higher than the minimum.
   
5. Baccalaureate degree holders approved to this program are not eligible to receive further transfer or challenge credits.
   
6. College diploma applicants with less than two (2) years accumulated, paid, full-time equivalent, relevant work experience in the social services field will not be considered and should apply to the full-time Advanced Standing - Second Year Entry option.
   
7. Baccalaureate applicants with less than two (2) years accumulated, paid, full-time equivalent, relevant work experience in the social services field will not be considered and should apply to the full-time four-year program.

3. Two letters of reference (either two professional references or one professional and one academic reference).
   
4. Applicants must also submit a letter(s) confirming the terms and conditions of their employment in the social services field, for a minimum of two years.
   
5. Applicants must submit a personal statement. This statement should indicate why the applicant is choosing Social Work. Why Toronto Met? Why now?
   

The Toronto Met School of Social Work has been offering social work education since 1964 and a baccalaureate degree program since 1973.

The program offers a combination of academic studies in social work, professionally-related courses, liberal studies and field practicum experiences.

The curriculum focuses on anti-oppression, empowerment and structural perspectives on social work practice with individuals, families, groups and communities.

Students and graduates are eligible for membership in the Ontario Association of Social Workers and the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.

Upon admission to the program, students are advised that their conduct is governed by the Canadian Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics (external link, opens in new window)  . Violation of the Code may lead to suspension from the program on grounds of professional unsuitability.

Graduates of the program are eligible to apply for advanced standing in graduate programs in social work.

Students admitted into the first year of the full-time BSW program are required to complete a practicum in both the third and fourth years of the program.

Students admitted with Advanced Standing into the part-time program holding a Social Service Worker Diploma or a Human Service Counselor Diploma or equivalent from a public Ontario College will receive transfer credits for the third year field practicum courses based on their prior experiences, but are required to complete a field practicum in the fourth year of the program.

Students admitted with Advanced Standing into the part-time program holding a Bachelor Degree are required to complete a field practicum in both the third and fourth year of the program.

These experiences are designed to enable students to integrate theoretical knowledge and practice skills under the field instruction of a qualified practitioner in the community. Settings and field instructors are selected by the School in accordance with the curriculum and the standards set out by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (external link, opens in new window)  . Practica are available in a wide range of fields of practice including: child welfare, mental health, active treatment hospitals, rehabilitation, community centres, nursing homes, multi-cultural services, social planning settings and many more. Availability of a given setting may vary from year to year. The practicum is unpaid and students are responsible for related costs such as travel to and from the practicum setting, a criminal record check, required vaccinations, or health examination. A valid driver’s license will enhance the student’s ability to secure a practicum.

Part-time courses are administered by either the program department or The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education. The mode of delivery is not reflected in this calendar. These courses are identified in your course selection enrolment package with a 'C' prefix. These identifiers are for internal use only and do not affect the equivalency.

Students must take two lower level liberal studies courses and four upper level liberal studies courses to graduate. Students must not choose courses that are restricted for their program or major.

Advanced Standing Admission - Two-year Program Students must take two semesters of upper level liberal studies courses to graduate. If an upper level liberal studies course requires a prerequisite, students MUST apply for a transfer credit for that prerequisite. This will only serve as proof of prerequisite and will not apply toward the degree.

Students may pursue any Minor offered by Toronto Met (with some exceptions). Please refer to the Minors chapter of this calendar for further information on individual Minor requirements and exclusions.

Advanced Standing Admission – Second Year Entry students are required to take additional courses from first year as part of their degree requirements. See Admission Information above and Offer of Admission for details.

Direct Entry students will normally be admitted into 5th semester (3rd Year) of this program. Students should refer to their Offer of Admission for details.  

In addition to the general criteria used to determine Academic Standing, students in this program must also meet the following conditions: 

• A failure in SWP 36A/B or SWP 51A/B leads to PROBATIONARY Standing.
• A second consecutive failure in any of these courses leads to a REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW Standing from the program.

The Director of the School of Social Work may remove a student from field placement and/or suspend them from the program when there is reason to conclude that the student:

• has behaved/performed in a manner which endangers students, clients, agency staff, faculty, or staff; or
• has harassed/abused a student, client, agency staff, faculty, staff or others; or
• has been convicted of, or has been charged with, a criminal offence involving violent or abusive behaviour; or
• is in violation of the Core Social Work Values and Principles of the Canadian Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics (2005).
