Newborn Screening Dilemmas
A systematic survey of the genetics, biology, and pathobiology of thirty diseases in Ontario combined with critical discussion on the intersection of routine screening with social determinants of health. Students will gain an understanding of the newborn screening practices, and ethical decision-making involved in obtaining informed consent. Critical discussion about how people’s material conditions impact access to and navigation of genetic screening creates capacity for ethical decision-making that centers the lived reality of clients.
