Art and Modernism

The conceptual core of this course will be a study of the modernist conception of the nature of aesthetic experience. Key readings by philosophers, art theorists, critics, and artists will be discussed. We will pursue the modernists’ themes regarding the autonomy of artistic form, the concomitant insistence that features of the medium in which it is realized are primary determinants of autonomous artistic forms, and the skepticism regarding representation.
