Fashion and Popular Culture in East Asia
This course examines contemporary fashion and culture in East Asia, including China, Japan and South Korea. Students will gain a broad understanding of East Asian fashion trends and popular culture within a historical, socio-cultural, political and economic context. Moreover, students will become familiarized with major concepts such as
ethnic dress and contemporary fashion, cultural identity and social self, popular culture and subculture, and transnational culture and a globalized media-scape. This course encourages students to explore and think critically about the impact of East Asian fashion and popular culture as well as the development of cultural values and symbolic
meanings.
