Characterization of Organic Compounds
The application of spectroscopic methods to structure determination. Topics include ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Emphasis will be placed on the use of coupling patterns and coupling constants to gain insight into the chemical structure of compounds using NMR. The laboratory will require students to purify and characterize samples using the above spectroscopic methods.
