    Course DescriptionThis course offers an overview of activities and responsibilities within both the public health and occupational health and safety professions, and illustrates how the programs prepare practitioners for these career paths. The course will introduce some of the key areas that will be studied later in the program: safe food and water, epidemiology, infection control, occupational health and safety, law, accident theory and safety control methods. Information about professional membership and certification will be included.

  • POH 103 - Data Management
    Course Description

    This course addresses the gathering of data, its aggregation, description, and presentation. Topics include measures of central tendency (geometric and arithmetic means, mode and median, standard deviation, standard error and confidence limits and error bars). Other descriptive processes include bar charts, scatter plots, stem-and-leaf diagrams, and an introduction to the use of spreadsheets and cross-tabulations ('pivot tables').

  • POH 201 - Determinants of Health
    Course DescriptionA course that examines the complex interactions between factors that influence human health. These determinants of health help to explain and predict trends in health for individuals and the community. Determinants explored include income and social status, education, physical environments, genetics, personal health practices, healthy child development, health services, gender and culture. How these determinants impact health locally, nationally and internationally will be examined and the way health is measured will also be explored.

  • POH 407 - Environment and Emergencies
    Course DescriptionBasic aspects of air and water pollution and soil contamination are covered, along with an introduction to federal and provincial environmental legislation. Transportation spills, natural disasters, major industrial fires and explosions, epidemics, terrorism and other aspects of emergency preparedness are covered. Both federal and provincial emergency preparedness legislation are examined. Issues concerning the integration of environmental protection and emergency preparedness into management systems are introduced.

  • POH 705 - Health Promotion and Education
    Course DescriptionThis course introduces adult learning styles, and issues and strategies related to health education and promotion. Theories relating to individual, group behaviour models are explored and analyzed. Students will learn the important components of health education and health promotion, have the opportunity to critically analyze and evaluate other programs, and will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge.
