General Information

Ryerson Student ID Number

A student number is a nine digit number that uniquely identifies students to faculty and program administrators at Ryerson University. (It can easily be found on your OneCard below your name.)

Identity Management - Policies and Procedures

To ensure the integrity of Ryerson student records, all students must be associated with one Ryerson Student ID Number. This Ryerson Student ID Number encompasses all of the students’ academic history, class enrolments and financial information at Ryerson.

To assist Ryerson in maintaining accurate records, students have the responsibility to ensure that Ryerson is informed of any changes or corrections to their personal information. This information may include, but is not limited to the following:

  • Student’s First and/or Last Name
  • Home address
  • Mailing address
  • Phone number(s)
  • Date of Birth

Name changes or corrections to Name or Date of Birth may be submitted to the Office of the Registrar (opens in new window)  Client Services located in the ServiceHub (opens in new window)  (POD150) using the  (PDF file) Personal Data Change Form.

Note: Supporting Documentation is required for all Name Changes. (See Personal Information Update)

Ryerson Online Identity

Students use their Ryerson Online Identity to access various online resources.

Students are eligible to activate their Ryerson online identity 24 hours after they have been admitted to a degree program, enrolled in a continuing education course, or hired by Ryerson.

During the activation process students will be able to select their user name, such as: johndoe, john.doe, etc., known as their my.ryerson username.

Students' Ryerson email addresses take the form: username@ryerson.ca, where username is the student's my.ryerson username, eg. john.doe@ryerson.ca.

For security reasons do not write down the password.

A Student/Applicant ID or Employee Number is needed to activate a Ryerson online identity. (See How to Activate Your Ryerson Online Identity (opens in new window) ).

Ryerson's Administrative Management Self Service (RAMSS) is a one-stop shop for just about everything students need to do online, such as viewing their academic, financial and personal information and updating their records.

RAMSS has other useful administrative links, help menus and job aids. Log in at my.ryerson.ca (opens in new window)  choose and the RAMSS tab.

All students in full and part-time graduate and undergraduate degree programs and all continuing education students are required to activate and maintain their Ryerson online identity in order to access Ryerson's E-mail, RAMSS, my.ryerson.ca portal and learning system, and other systems by which they will receive official University communications.

Students are required to monitor and retrieve messages and information issued to them by the University via Ryerson online systems on a frequent and consistent basis.

Students have the responsibility to recognize that certain communications may be time-critical.

Students may forward their Ryerson E-mail account to another electronic mail service provider address but remain responsible for ensuring that all University electronic message communication sent to their official Ryerson E-mail account is received and read.

Procedures for student activation and use, as well as the Ryerson Student Computing Guidelines, will be available on the Ryerson University Computing and Communications Services (CCS) website. Students may communicate with Ryerson and Ryerson faculty, instructors, teaching and graduate assistants and staff in a variety of ways: in-person, telephone, letters (either hand-delivered, by regular post, courier or registered mail) or electronically.

Ryerson requires that any electronic communications by students to Ryerson faculty or staff be sent from their official Ryerson E-mail account.

The OneCard is the official identification card for the Ryerson University community. As well as being the single most important piece of ID students possess during their time here at Ryerson, it also serves as a convenience card for many of the services available on campus, including the library, printing and photocopying, food purchases, discounts, savings and more.

First Time Ryerson Students

The OneCard is issued free of charge by the OneCard Office at first admission/enrolment, and must be picked up within one academic year from term of approval.

Students must provide their Ryerson student number and two pieces of valid government issued identification, at least one piece of identification must feature a current photo. Cards are not mailed and must be picked up in person. The OneCard is designed to last throughout the duration of study at Ryerson. There is an "Early Online Application Process Program" for the OneCard, please our web page for details.

In addition to the "Early Online Application Process Program" The OneCard office sets up special facilities for students to get their OneCard during Fall Orientation so that the card can be set-up properly for use.

Returning Students

Based on a student's continued enrolment with Ryerson University, the OneCard will remain active for accessing University services. This does not include access to buildings or labs.

Specifics of the Ryerson OneCard

The OneCard is used for identification purposes within the University. The front of the card shows the student photo, name, student number and library bar code. The back of the card has the magnetic black stripe. Within the card is Smart Card technology.

The Library bar code is used by the Library to keep track of student accounts. For more information on this please contact the Library.

The magnetic black stripe is used to make purchases on campus. This is called the Ryerson OneCard's 'stored value' prepaid service which effectively allows students to carry money on their Ryerson OneCard. If students lose their card they do not lose money. Load money onto the OneCard account at 15 add cash machines on campus (three are in the Library) and at the OneCard office. The OneCard office is the only place that accepts debit and credit cards.

Use the 'stored value' funds for: all Ryerson Food Services for meals (for example - the Hub Market Servery, Tim Horton's and Starbucks kiosks, ILLC Mutual Street Eatery, Oakham House Cafe, Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC) and Ram in the Rye); Bookstore; student photocopiers; student laser printers; drink and snack vending machines (approximately 100 on campus), Image Arts, Interior Design, Architecture, Rogers Post Production and the Ryerson Image Centre. Services are expanding all the time please visit our website for exciting details and specifics.

The OneCard is also used for door access if granted. The card contains Smart Card technology. Activation of this security feature is controlled by the student's school/department.

Care of The Ryerson OneCard

The initial Ryerson OneCard is free, however, students will be required to pay $35 (subject to change) for replacement cards due to damaged or loss cards. Students should carry their OneCard with them at all times when on campus. Failure to produce a OneCard upon request by Security Officers, may lead to removal from Ryerson Property.

DO NOT PUNCH a hole in the OneCard. Replacement cards cost $35 (subject to change). The Ryerson OneCard should be treated with care. Holes, creases, and cuts will render the card inoperable. Please do not leave the card in direct sunlight, near heat sources or in contact with magnetic fields.

Lost or Stolen Cards

It is important that lost or stolen cards are reported immediately. before notifying us, students are responsible for unauthorized transactions resulting from the theft or loss of their card. Students must also notify the Library to ensure their card is not used to remove books.

Accounts can be immediately frozen to protect funds. Notification occurs once the student has reported the lost/stolen card to the OneCard Office.
