Concentrations

A Concentration consists of at least six specified/prescribed courses within an area of disciplinary or interdisciplinary study, which is completed on an optional basis and is noted on the academic transcript.

A Concentration provides students the opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge representing a subspecialization or emphasis within the core discipline or major.

Courses for a Concentration are selected from the professional (core) elective courses offered to students within their discipline or major. Professional (core) required courses may not be included in the course count/defined structure of a Concentration.

More than one Concentration may be obtained within a program; however, an individual course can be applied only to one Concentration. Earning one Concentration will not increase the number of courses required to graduate.

The Concentration is approved by Senate, as per the requirements for a Category 3 Minor Modification outlined in the Procedures section of Senate Policy 127: Curriculum Modifications: Graduate and Undergraduate Programs.

1. A Senate-approved Concentration consists of at least six, specified/prescribed one- semester ^[1] professional (core) elective courses offered to students within their discipline or major.
2. A Concentration is intended as a sub-specialization or emphasis within the core discipline or major.
3. Professional (core) required courses of the discipline or major may not be included in the course count/defined structure of a Concentration.
4. The completion of a Concentration is optional.
5. Where it is possible, a student may complete more than one Concentration; however, an individual course can be applied to satisfy the requirements of one Concentration only.
6. Course substitutions are not permitted.
7. Completion of a Concentration is subject to availability of courses.
   
8. Completion of the degree, with the addition of more than one Concentration, may require the completion of extra courses. Additional fees may also be incurred.
9. Concentrations must be completed before graduation.
   
10. Completion of a Concentration(s) is recorded on the academic transcript.
    
11. Restrictions such as grade variations on individual courses or a minimum CGPA requirement for completion of the Concentration are not permitted.
    
12. A course(s) taken within a Concentration cannot also be counted/applied toward satisfying the requirements of a Minor.
13. Students must declare a Concentration(s) at a time specified by their program. The opportunity to complete a Concentration may be subject to availability.
