The Bridging Divides research program is accepting applications for a UX Designer Intern position to support the Observatory on Immigration Discourses (IDIO) project. Bridging Divides is dedicated to building a new understanding of the challenges and opportunities that migrant integration poses for Canada, and all countries, locally and across borders. IDIO is an innovative project at the intersection of artificial intelligence and web development, dedicated to building scalable AI services and tools. Our team consists of AI scientists focused on large language models (LLMs) and natural language processing (NLP), as well as web developers and engineers. We’re looking for a UX Designer with experience in AI applications to create engaging, intuitive, and visually compelling interfaces that will help users interact seamlessly with our AI-powered services.

Position overview

We are looking for a creative and skilled UX Designer to join our team. You will play a vital role in designing user-centered interfaces for AI applications, ensuring a smooth and intuitive experience that makes complex AI functionalities accessible and easy to use. Your designs will bridge the gap between AI technology and the end user, making our tools powerful yet approachable.

Description of duties

  • Design and prototype intuitive user interfaces for AI applications, taking into account user needs and technical requirements.
  • Work closely with AI scientists and developers to understand AI functionalities and translate them into user-friendly designs.
  • Develop wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes to communicate design ideas effectively.
  • Conduct user research, including usability testing and interviews, to understand user behavior and refine designs based on feedback.
  • Create design guidelines and maintain visual consistency across the project.
  • Collaborate on front-end integration, ensuring that the final product aligns with the design vision.
  • Stay updated on AI design trends and best practices for user experience in AI-powered applications.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD in Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer Science, or a related field at an accredited university in Canada.
  • Proven experience in UX design, with a focus on AI applications or complex web applications.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating user-centered design skills, particularly in AI, data science, or tech-driven applications.
  • Proficiency in design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch).
  • Understanding of human-centered design principles, usability testing, and user research methods.
  • Experience in translating complex, technical concepts into user-friendly interfaces.
  • Familiarity with front-end frameworks like React or Next.js is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
