In 1998, Toronto Metropolitan University, formerly known as Ryerson University celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding and its fifth as a university. This occasion provided a special opportunity to create the Alumni Achievement Awards to recognize the superior calibre of alumni. Our alumni have carried forward with them the strength of our programs which are distinguished by Toronto Metropolitan University’s view that theory and professional practice are partners in the education process.

Award of Distinction

Sabrina Craig

Business Technology Management ‘19
Director, Vaccine Hunters Canada

Sabrina was a director at Vaccine Hunters Canada (VHC), a volunteer community dedicated to connecting eligible Canadians with vaccination appointments. Sabrina scaled the organization to a management team of 150+ people and 400,000+ followers across Canada on platforms such as Discord, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and TikTok — accomplishing all this in just six months, all with volunteers (including herself), and all without corporate or government funding. Millions of Canadians used VHC and their tools to find their vaccinations. In 2022, Sabrina was named a Top 25 Women of Influence.

Christina Kramer

Senior Executive Vice-President and Group Head, Technology, Infrastructure and Innovation, CIBC

Christina is responsible for technology, infrastructure and innovation for CIBC worldwide. Her team enables the efficient, reliable running of the bank, protecting CIBC from risks, and proactively partners with CIBC’s lines of business to accelerate growth by transforming how the bank operates, and meeting clients’ and team members’ evolving needs. She leads a talented team and nurtures an inclusive culture focused on a shared purpose to help make clients’ ambitions a reality. Since joining CIBC in 1987, Christina has held progressively more senior executive roles within CIBC’s retail, business banking and human resources groups. Most recently, she was Senior Executive Vice-President and Group Head, Personal and Small Business Banking.

Timothy Muttoo

Chemical Engineering ’96
Chief Technology & Public Health Officer, H2O 4 ALL

Timothy co-founded the international non-profit H2O 4 ALL in 2008, believing that people all over the globe have the right to access safe water and adequate sanitation. He has initiated sustainable technology, development of tools and good practices in over 12 developing countries. Timothy has spoken worldwide, from giving talks at scientific conferences and speaking to country governments to guest lecturing at various universities. In addition, he hires Toronto Metropolitan University co-op students and provides them with mentorship and hands-on experience to help them become more socially engaged engineers. In 2018, Timothy was a recipient of the G. Raymond Chang Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Sangita Patel

Electrical Engineering ’02
Host, ET Canada

Sangita is an engineer turned television personality who worked her way up the Canadian news landscape. She joined ET Canada in 2014, covering entertainment news and interviewing some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and became the co-host in 2022. She is also the host of HGTV Canada’s home renovation series Home to Win. In 2019, Sangita was named COVERGIRL’s first Canadian South Asian ambassador and spokesperson. A strong believer in education, she is a supporter of Pathways to Education, Children’s Wish and ONE Campaign. In 2021, Sangita spearheaded ET Canada’s HELP INDIA broadcast special, helping to raise over $135,000 for the Humanitarian Coalition’s emergency response efforts in India.

Hon. Justice Gregory Regis

Journalism ’77
Former Regional Senior Justice, Ontario Court of Justice

Gregory has been a judge of the Ontario Court of Justice since 1999. In 2007, he became the first person of colour in Canada to be appointed a Regional Senior Justice. Before entering the legal profession, Gregory had a successful career as a journalist and editor with Associated Press and CBC Radio and Television, among other international news services. He is an active community leader and has served in leadership positions in several organizations focused on development and culture. Gregory is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from Toronto Metropolitan University, the Vice-Chancellor’s Award from the University of the West Indies and the Harry Jerome Lifetime Achievement Award.

Amorell Saunders N’Daw

Journalism ’88
Partner, KBRS

A Partner in KBRS’s National Academic Search Practice and the firm’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Lead, Amorell uses her unique combination of corporate communications, governance, and EDI skills and experience to assist organizations in the search and recruitment process. Amorell also provides EDI counsel and training to organizational leaders. She served as a member of the University’s Standing Strong Task Force and is a recipient of the G. Raymond Chang Outstanding Volunteer Award. The Amorell Saunders N’Daw Award for Equity Leadership was recently established at The Creative School, giving promising Black and equity-deserving students additional support to realize their potential.

Andrew Young

Founder and Director, Vaccine Hunters Canada

In March 2021, Andrew started Vaccine Hunters Canada (VHC), a volunteer community with the mission of connecting eligible Canadians to COVID-19 vaccines. VHC posted vaccine availability via social media and had over 100 volunteers and 500,000 followers. A year later, VHC ended operations, after helping millions of Canadians get vaccinated from coast to coast to coast. Recognition highlights in 2021 include the Ontario Minister of Colleges and Universities’ Award of Excellence, U.K. Commonwealth Point of Light Award, and being named #1 on Toronto Life’s Top 50 Most Influential Torontonians. Andrew is currently a web developer at Toronto Metropolitan University.

Isadore Sharp Outstanding Recent Graduate

Curtis Oland

Fashion Design ’17
Fashion Designer

Originally from the B.C. Okanagan Valley and currently based in Berlin, Curtis is an Indigenous Lil’Wat and Scottish-settler garment designer and interdisciplinary artist. His connection to his Indigenous heritage, to the supernatural, mountainous landscapes of his homeland, and his experiences as an international nomad, have created an essence of raw, subdued wilderness that celebrates and honours land and materiality. His work traverses the realms of art, fashion, performance, installation, film and creative direction, having worked on collaboratively driven projects that allow for diverse and imaginative storytelling. Since completing his studies, Curtis has exhibited work across Canada, and abroad in the UK, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.
