Resources to support staying safe on campus this winter
With winter classes officially underway, Toronto Metropolitan University is reminding the university community of our commitment to campus safety and a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to supporting safety and security on campus.
Alongside providing around-the-clock incident response management and front-line coverage of campus through GardaWorld security guards, the Community Safety and Security team engages in a variety of innovative community-centric initiatives aimed at enhancing the resilience of our surrounding community.
Underpinning our work is the development and maintenance of key community partnerships dedicated to bringing tailored services to street-involved individuals who may be experiencing challenges with mental health, substance abuse and the impacts of being unhoused. Working with our external social agency and city partners, we regularly engage all levels of government to champion the provision of resources aimed at addressing social development needs within our neighbourhood.
Access key resources and programming through Community Safety and Security
As community members return to campus following the mid-year winter break, we’re reminding everyone of key security resources available to the TMU community and information about our shared mission to promote well-being and safety on campus.
You don’t need to go alone: Contact Walk Safe
Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, rain or shine, TMU community members and visitors can arrange for a uniformed security staff member to accompany them to buildings on campus and nearby locations like the subway or parking lots.

Engage Security to develop a Personal Safety Plan
Recognizing that an individual’s feelings of safety are deeply personal, Community Safety and Security offers personalized safety planning supports to meet the unique needs and abilities of our students, faculty and staff. This includes scenario-based guidance, tools and resources aimed at helping you make informed decisions about your safety on campus.
Our Personal Safety Planning sessions are customizable, can accommodate individuals or groups, and can be delivered in-person or virtually.

Attend a workshop or training session
Offered regularly throughout the year, Community Safety and Security runs a variety of workshops and training sessions designed to assist community members in developing skills for responding to threats to their personal safety. Sessions include:

Download the TMU Safe app and subscribe to receive text alerts
TMU Safe is the university’s mass notification tool, providing community members with push notifications regarding urgent situations on campus that pose immediate safety or security threats. Plus, you’ll be immediately notified of any Snow Days this semester!
Haven’t used the TMU Safe app in a while?
If it's been some time since you’ve opened the app on your phone, follow the instructions below to ensure the app is still working correctly.
iPhone users: check to determine if your phone has offloaded the app due to inactivity. If this is the case, redownload the app to ensure it’s working correctly.
Android users: double-check to determine if the app has entered hibernation mode. You can prevent this by redownloading the app and disabling this feature within the app’s settings when automatically prompted to do so upon downloading.
Access campus buildings with your OneCard
As you likely already know, all exterior campus doors have been OneCard access only. Use your OneCard to enter buildings on campus by tapping your card against the card reader located at exterior building entrances.

Help prevent tailgating
With buildings on campus requiring a OneCard for entry, community members are asked not to hold doors open for other individuals as all TMU students, faculty and staff are expected to have their OneCards on them at all times to access campus buildings.
