November 03, 2023

The 2023 Silver Signal Award winning podcast Borders & Belonging is back for a second season. Host Maggie Perzyna continues her mission to shed light on the migrant voices and stories often overlooked. This season, she speaks to leading academics and professionals working with migrants on the ground to understand how global forces are playing out at the local and regional levels, driving new challenges and impacting lives.

Maggie asks questions like: What fuels xenophobia in South Africa? Is Japan becoming a migration state? How is technology changing the places where people work and the countries trying to attract them? Season two kicks off with:

Episode 1: Why are so many undocumented migrants living in the U.S. originating from Indigenous places? We’ll hear from Odilia Romero, co-founder/ executive director of Comunidades Indigenas en Liderazgo, Shannon Speed, University of California, Los Angeles, and Asad L. Asad, Stanford University.

Episode 2: How border policies in the Americas are pushing people to travel across the treacherous Darién Gap. Roberto, a Venezuelan migrant, Edwin Guillermo Viales Mora, International Organization for Migration, and Caitlyn Yates, University of British Columbia, will help explain how global migration regimes push migrants to travel through life-threatening routes .

In Season 1 of Borders & Belonging, Maggie debunked some of the biggest migration myths with the help of top academics and people working on the front lines. Digital resources are available for each episode and include interview transcripts, links to related articles, references and the biographies of guest experts. Educators are finding that Borders & Belonging makes an excellent addition to their syllabus for courses in migration studies.
