
Slamet Thohari
Slamet Thohari, a person with disabilities from Indonesia, pursued his formal education at the Faculty of Philosophy, Universitas Gadjah Mada, and achieved a master’s in sociology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Currently, he is dedicated to pursuing a PhD at the Institute for Culture and Society, Western Sydney University. Active from 2004 to 2008 in the Center for Inclusion and Advocacy Movement for Disability, Slamet subsequently took on roles as both a researcher and lecturer in the sociology department at the Universitas Brawijaya.
In 2012, in collaboration with friends, he co-founded the Disability Center at the university and initiated the Indonesian Journal of Disability Studies. The aim of the centre was to provide equal educational opportunities for individuals with disabilities and foster dialogue on disability issues, particularly in Indonesia. The institution received the “Inclusive Award” from the Indonesian government in 2013 and the prestigious “Zero Project Award” from the Essl Foundation, Austria, in 2020. Slamet’s diverse research interests encompass disability studies, the sociology of medicine and health, intersectionality, and Islam in Indonesia.
