About this event

A Solution-focused (SF) approach to Graduate Supervision is a strengths-based, constructivist communication technique that accentuates the strengths of students in building solutions. A small but growing body of evidence indicates the effectiveness of this approach in higher education. This workshop will introduce SF techniques that are effective in graduate supervision, such as boundary setting, management of strong emotions, hope activation and intentional listening. Supported by a 2020-21 Learning and Teaching Grant, the facilitators will share findings from a Community of Practice that involved seven graduate supervisors in the application of SF techniques and strategies.

Facilitated by:

  • Dr. Yukari Seko, Assistant Professor, School of Professional Communication, the Creative School
  • Asmaa Malik, Co-Interim Chair and Associate Professor, School of Journalism
