Open to students, faculty, and staff, Academic Integrity Awareness Week, which will take place from October 3-7, is a university-wide event offering workshops aimed at educating TMU community members about academic integrity as well as helping to answer the question, ‘What can be considered academic misconduct?’. This event is presented by the Academic Integrity Office (AIO), a resource area within the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching in collaboration with International Student Support, The Tri-Mentoring Program (part of SLLS), and Student Life and Learning Support.

The AIO is an information resource that exists to promote a culture of integrity by educating members of the TMU community, as well as to ensure that Policy 60: Academic Integrity is carried out in a fair and transparent way. The AIO works to provide support to students and decision-makers on campus so everyone is aware of their rights and responsibilities.

This year’s event will also act as a re-introduction to resources available to faculty, staff and students, as well as an opportunity to talk about the many intricacies of academic integrity, both on and off campus.

“The main focus of AIAW this year is to acknowledge that we all ‘start where we are’. We hope that bringing the ‘Awareness’ to Academic Integrity will also help everyone feel more comfortable having open conversations about the many factors, often beyond the classroom, that impact academic integrity and academic success.”

This year’s programming was developed with the hope of reaching students during their first semester of the academic year in order to address concerns and support faculty and staff in answering common student questions. AIAW will also be taking place in tandem with Wellbeing Week, and will provide a solid foundation for TMU community members to best support teaching and learning in yet another period of transition.

“We hope to provide both new and returning students with practical guidance to support their introduction (or re-introduction) to academic expectations, campus supports and services, as well as how to manage both the everyday and unexpected challenges that can impact their learning.”

Overall, the goal of the event is to promote and foster a culture of academic integrity throughout the TMU community through active collaboration across campus. Many of the workshop topics were chosen with the goal of integrating considerations of academic integrity into not only teaching and learning, but student life as well.

“We hope that participants will broaden their understanding of the factors - both academic and non-academic - impacting the academic integrity of both teaching and learning, and develop strategies for addressing these challenges in a way that recognizes the holistic experiences of all at the University. We also hope to promote everything the University has to offer that supports academic integrity and student success, even if it’s not obvious!”
