A newly developed simulation funded by the Aboriginal Education Council will be at the forefront of an upcoming event titled “Reflect and Resist: Exploring Anti-Indigenous Racism through Live Actor Simulation”. The August 23 event will be facilitated by the Live Actor Simulation team, part of the Experiential Learning Hub, a primary resource area within the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, and will be held virtually on Zoom.

The workshop will introduce participants to a simulation titled “Who Am I in this Story”, which was developed to support faculty and staff as they introduce issues facing Indigenous peoples within curriculum and programming.

The Live Actor Simulation team has facilitated similar workshops in the past as part of their “Reflect and Resist” series. The ‘Exploring Anti-Black Racism Through Live Actor Simulation’ event, which was held in July 2020, focused on LAS’ simulation 207: Fallout After Violence. The workshop involved sharing one character’s perspective on what it is to be a Black man navigating the world. Facilitators also invited participants to interact with the character in order to explore the issue of anti-Black racism and its effects beyond mainstream conversations.

The newest iteration of the ‘Reflect and Resist’ series will give participants the opportunity to interact with the main character in the simulation, as they share their lived experiences as a member of the Indigenous community while navigating their relationship to Canadian culture and societal institutions.

The event will be facilitated by Consultant and Indigenous Storyteller, Shandra Spears Bombay, Writer and Trainer for Live Actor Simulation, Katherine Turner, and Lecturer in the Faculty of Community Services, Karen Arthurton.

Those interested in attending the event can register through the Learning Events Calendar portal

Registrants will be provided with preliminary resources as an introduction to how the simulation within the workshop will unfold. Participants should expect to be engaged throughout the event before having the opportunity to further discuss their experiences as a learner and reflections on its possible impact in the classroom.
