G Suite for Education has a new name and storage policy
To: All active account holders of Ryerson Google Workspace for Education
Google has announced that G Suite for Education is now known as Google Workspace for Education. Along with the updated name, Google’s new account storage policy will end the current availability of unlimited storage for educational institutions in July 2022.
In order to prepare, please review your current storage usage (external link) and delete any unnecessary files in Drive and Gmail.
Four ways to reduce your data usage
Please complete the following steps to reduce your data usage:
- Use the Storage feature in Drive (external link) to review your files from largest to smallest in size, and delete the large or unnecessary files.
- Review and delete large or unnecessary files in shared drives (external link) .
- Delete Drive files that you may have copied to a shared drive. If a file resides in two locations, it may be consuming twice your storage space.
- Search for and delete large or unnecessary emails in Gmail. For help doing so, visit the Manage files in your Google Drive storage page (external link) and follow the instructions for Gmail.
Retention schedule
When making decisions around what to delete, we recommend reviewing the Records Retention Schedule (RRS) to confirm the minimum retention period for different record types.
Storage limits to be introduced in early 2022
These steps will be voluntary through 2021 and more information, including your specific storage limit, will be shared later this year. Beginning in early 2022, we will implement individual storage limits for all users at Ryerson. Please complete the steps above as soon as possible.
