About the Early Learning Centre

The Early Learning Centre (ELC) is TMU’s licensed laboratory early learning and care centre. ELC Staff work to maintain excellent relationships with children and families through an active Family Advisory Committee, social events, and daily interactions. The ELC is an experiential learning environment for students in the Early Childhood Studies undergraduate and graduate degree programs, along with interprofessional field placement students from other Faculty of Community Services programs. Students also visit the ELC to gain observation skills by watching children and early childhood educators interact, and expand their knowledge of curricula in the early years. The ELC has accommodated visitors and students from a variety of programs and organizations locally, nationally and internationally, and is a site for research and innovation in early childhood.

The Opportunity

We are continuously seeking dedicated Early Childhood Educators (ECE) and Early Childhood Assistants (ECA) to join our team! The ideal candidates will have a strong commitment to working with young children, a solid understanding of early childhood development, and the ability to create a safe, engaging, and educational environment. These positions will support our Toddler and Preschool programs.

Work Schedule:

These part-time positions (up to 24 hours per week) involve varying shifts within our operating hours of 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Flexibility is essential as you will be scheduled to cover both anticipated and unforeseen absences.Your availability will be considered during the scheduling process.

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Assist with the implementation of weekly program plans 
  • Guide, supervise and assist children in the development of daily living skills while maintaining ratios
  • Lead activities and provide an environment that supports the children’s interests
  • Maintain an environment that protects the health, security, and well-being of children and assist in the maintenance of a well-prepared environment
  • Observe children and share relevant information with the ELC Registered Early Childhood Educators and Supervisor
  • Record notes and important information related to children’s well-being in the communication book (e.g., illness, accident reports)
  • Use professional and responsive communication with staff members to promote a collegial  partnership 
  • Collaborate with coworkers and community service providers to support the needs of the children and families. 
  • Read and remain in compliance with all centre policies and procedures and always maintain confidentiality

Qualifications

  • Diploma and/or Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field, and/or current student who has successfully completed two years of the program.
  • Preference given to Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECE) in good standing
  • Knowledge of early childhood development theories and practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility, reliability, and adaptability.
  • Completion of CPR and First Aid Training Level C
  • Up-to-date medical records and immunizations, including TB test 
  • Vulnerable Sector Check completed within 6 months of the date of hire
