This interdisciplinary course will employ a popular education framework to explore the tensions between criminalization and harm reduction with respect to illicit substance use, sex work and incarceration. Current qualitative and quantitative research, both Canadian and international in scope, community agencies, advocates and first-person accounts will be drawn upon to explore topics including policy implementations and implications, historic forms of criminalization and their modern expressions, Canadian and international approaches, and the politics of stigmatization.
