This course examines the experiences of the Indigenous peoples living in the Great Lakes region in the centuries immediately before and after the arrival of European colonizers. Who were the Indigenous nations whose territories comprised this region and what happened during their early encounters with Europeans? What role did epidemic disease play in transforming Indigenous societies? How did Indigenous peoples respond to the challenges posed by missionaries, traders and settlers? How did war and conflict re-shape the Indigenous world? This course explores these and other questions.
