Great Lakes Indigenous/Colonial History
This course considers the history of the Great Lakes region through the encounters that occurred between First Nations and Europeans (and some Africans) between the 1500s and the mid-1800s. After an introductory examination of Iroquoian and Algonquian societies on the eve of 'contact,' students explore trade, missions, disease, diplomacy, conflict, dislocation, resistance, material culture, and the evolution of Indigenous societies and their relationships with newcomers through this formative period in North American history.
