  • CHN 101 - Introductory Chinese I
    Course DescriptionThis course is designed to help students with no prior background in Mandarin to develop functional communication abilities in all four language skills. Using the standard Hànyu Pinyin phonetic system, a variety of authentic materials, vocabulary and sentence patterns, students will learn to make statements, ask questions, respond to questions and create conversations based upon culturally authentic situations. By the end of this course, students will be able to read and write 250 characters. An online placement test is required.

    Course DescriptionThis course is designed for students with some background in Mandarin to improve their functional communication abilities in all four language skills in spoken and written Mandarin. Using the standard Hànyu Pinyin phonetic system, a variety of authentic materials, vocabulary and sentence patterns, students will learn to make statements, ask questions, respond to questions and conduct conversations. By the end of this course, students will be able to read and write 800 Chinese characters.

  • CHN 401 - Intermediate Chinese II
    Course DescriptionThis course is for students with some background in Mandarin who wish to improve their communication abilities in all four language skills. By using the standard Hànyu Pinyin phonetic system and a variety of authentic materials, students will learn to make statements, ask questions, respond to questions and create conversations based upon culturally authentic situations. By the end of this course, students will be able to read and write over 1000 Chinese characters.

  • CHN 402 - Chinese Conversation and Pronunciation
    Course DescriptionThis intermediate course is intended to enhance oral proficiency of non-native speakers of Chinese by focusing on vocabulary, syntax, auditive comprehension and intonation. Students improve their language skills through a range of oral practice activities, including the analysis of audiovisual materials, films and plays as well as discussion of written texts from newspapers and advertisements. In addition to the International Phonetic Alphabet, both the Hànyu Pinyin phonemic system and Simplified Chinese characters are used.

  • CHN 501 - Advanced Chinese I
    Course DescriptionThis course is designed for students with an intermediate knowledge of Chinese. It will focus on improving listening comprehension, reading, writing and speaking Mandarin Chinese. Using a variety of authentic materials, students learn to produce oral and written texts based upon culturally appropriate situations. By the end of the course, students will be able to read brief short stories and write essays containing 1250 characters.

  • CHN 502 - Communication Business Chinese
    Course DescriptionStudents are asked to read and analyze complete newspaper and magazine articles as well as advertising and presenting their analyses to the class. Students are expected to focus on written and oral expression in Mandarin Chinese to work toward context-sensitive accuracy of expression.

  • CHN 515 - Introduction to Business Chinese
    Course DescriptionThis course introduces students to the fundamentals of Chinese for business. Students learn to master basic vocabulary specific to business, banking and administration, while becoming aware of formal and informal styles of written and spoken Chinese suitable to the workplace. The language of instruction is Mandarin Chinese.

  • CHN 601 - Advanced Chinese II
    Course DescriptionThis course is designed for students with a high-intermediate knowledge of Chinese. It will focus on improving listening comprehension, reading, writing and speaking Mandarin Chinese. The conversations and written texts will be based upon culturally appropriate situations. By the end of the course, students are able to read a novella and write essays containing 1500 characters.

  • CHN 602 - Chinese Business in Practice
    Course DescriptionStudents with a solid background in the language will find this course helpful in improving their ability to use Chinese in business transactions and communications. There is a strong emphasis on using business vocabulary, particularly correspondence formulae and terminology effectively and appropriately. Differences between English and Chinese writing protocol are clearly expressed. The language of instruction is Mandarin Chinese.

  • CHN 612 - Contemporary Chinese Language and Culture
    Course DescriptionThis course, taught in Chinese, introduces students to crucial elements of cultural studies, linguistic and literary analysis for an appreciation of the Chinese language and culture. Students examine different genres of writing, demotic and scholarly texts, and select works of representative contemporary Chinese literary figures. Basic essay skills form an integral part of the course, with special attention to complex grammatical structures, various language registers (written and spoken), and sociolinguistic issues in modern Chinese.
