Dress-Cultural Transformation

This course will explore the historic and contemporary clothing traditions of non-western cultures. Clothing practices of China and Japan will be examined within the framework of the supporting social and cultural infrastructure. Areas of study will include, clothing culture; fashion and national politics and practices of appropriation and emulation. The course will concentrate on the transfer of social cultural and design information between East and West. Students will acquire an understanding of the role of fashion in Japan and China and in the process of cultural transformation in the modern world.
