Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in cybersecurity

There is a pressing issue of talent shortage in the cybersecurity sector that needs to be examined through an intersectional lens with a particular focus on immigrants' role in workforce development.

Objective
This research examines immigrants' role in the cybersecurity workforce in terms of barriers to employment and potential actionable solutions to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion within the sector.

Research question(s)
- How does the intersection of gender, racialization, and immigrant status influence labour market outcomes within the cybersecurity sector?
- What are the key challenges and barriers faced by immigrant talent in accessing and advancing in cybersecurity careers?
- How can policies and initiatives be designed to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion for immigrants within the cybersecurity workforce?

Methodology
This project will use a mixed-methods sequential explanatory approach to incorporate quantitative data from the 2021 Canadian Census of Population with interviews with workers, hiring managers and executives within the cybersecurity sector.

This project has commenced and data collection is currently ongoing.
