The International Issues Discussion (IID) series at Ryerson University is pleased to present its eighth and final event of the Winter 2019 term: “Tibet: 60 Years of Non-Violent Resistance”, co-presented with the Canada Tibet Committee.
Our guests will be:
Bhutila Karpoche, who is the first person of Tibetan descent elected to public office in North America: a member of provincial parliament representing the NDP in Parkdale High Park, Toronto. Born to Tibetan refugees in Nepal, Bhutila has been a strong advocate for human rights in Tibet since her schools days. As member of Tibetan community, she has served on the board of directors of the Canadian Tibetan Association of Ontario and on the steering committee of the advocacy group International Tibet Network.
Dicki Chhoyang, who has been a steadfast advocate for Tibet for over three decades. Following the completion of her graduate field research on Tibetan-medium higher education, Dicki worked for several years with communities on the Tibetan plateau to further their development. From 2011-16, she served as the head of the Department of Information and International Relations for the Central Tibetan Administration and acted as one of its international spokespersons. With first-hand experience growing up in Canada combined with her work in Tibet and India, Dicki has valuable insight with regards to challenges facing the Tibetan movement.
Chemi Lhamo, currently the Vice President- Equity and the former Racialized Students’ Collective Coordinator on the Scarborough Campus Student’s Union (SCSU) at the University of Toronto Scarborough. She is also the co-founder of the Tibetan Youth Alliance Committee (T-YAC). She has served as the youngest board member to serve the Canadian Tibetan Association of Ontario and currently is a board member of Students for a Free Tibet. Chemi was recently elected President of the Student union for UTSC.
Consiglio Di Nino, who served as a member of the Canadian Senate between 1990 and 2012, and is a vocal advocate for Tibet: having urged a boycott of the People’s Republic of China because of its occupation. From a career in business with Toronto-Dominion Bank and Realty Capital Corporation, he founded and became CEO of Cabot Capital Corporation. Appointed to the Senate on the recommendation of Prime Minister Mulroney, he served as Government Whip in the Senate over 2010-2011. Senator Di Nino has also been heavily involved in the Italian-Canadian community.
All are welcome and admission is free.
Founded in 2005, the IID is a non-partisan, student-led forum designed to engage all members of the Ryerson University community on major events and issues in contemporary global affairs through reasoned, objective, and scholarly discourse.
