Dr. Kelly Struthers Montford

Dr. Kelly Struthers Montford holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology from the University of Ottawa, and attained her Masters of Arts and PhD from the University of Alberta. She has previously served as the Senior Advisor to the Independent Expert on Human Rights and Corrections for the Province of Ontario, and was postdoctoral fellow in Punishment, Social Theory, and Law, at the Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies at the University of Toronto where her work spanned constitutional challenges to solitary confinement, women in conflict with the law, and risk and race. Kelly’s current research focuses on the re-opening of penitentiary animal agriculture in Ontario. In 2014, she was the Institute for Critical Animal Studies Hilda Scholar of the Year. Her research bridges settler colonial studies, punishment and captivity, environmental, animal, and Anthropocene studies, and law. Kelly’s work has been published in journals spanning philosophy, law, and theory. She is the co-editor of two volumes published by Routledge in 2020: Colonialism and Animality and Disability and Animality.

Prior to joining Ryerson, Kelly was an Assistant Professor of Sociology at UBC Okanagan.
